A daily meditative process for deconstructing the false Identity.
By “deconstructing” all identifications, through using the mind itself in the process, the true nature of the changeless Space can reveal itself as what you impersonally are and always have been.
This aware, empty Knowingness is also called the Buddha Eye.
This Buddha Eye becomes contracted during any kind of cognitive mis-identification. By releasing the contraction of this false identification, the Buddha Eye suddenly knows its own un-originated True Nature and sees Reality clearly.
First we go through a process of differentiating all appearances from what we actually are.
This is called Viveka in Advaita and Vivicca in Pali. The Buddha taught exactly this method.
Referring to the written list as needed, close your eyes and contemplate each item on the list with the phrase:
“I am not ___________, it is not mine, it is not what I am”. But I am the unchanging Aware Space in which this appears and disappears.
For example: “I am not the physical body, it is not mine, it is not what I am”. But I am the unchanging Aware Space in which this appears and disappears.
Here’s a list of typical identifications:
The physical body
The brain
The mind that thinks
The feeling of “me”
The feeling of “I am”
My self image
Memories
A sense of individual identity
A sense of self
The one who suffers
The one with problems
The one with fear
The one who is depressed
The one with emotional responses
The one who dies
The mind
thoughts
the intellect
a self concept
the personality
the ego
a form
a human
an organism
energy
a soul
a spirit
A god
An individual
The seeker
The practitioner
The one doing this in order to become liberated
At some point during the process, a somewhat significant dis-identification can occur, where the inner space of awareness becomes suddenly crystal clear as identity shifts to being that empty, Space of Awareness itself
