1940 prices

Vintage Ad of the Day - The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us and the stores are very busy with shoppers getting their last-minute groceries for the big day. Today’s vintage ad is from a November 1940 Advertiser Tribune from the A&P grocery stores in Tiffin. In 1940, there were two A&P stores – one at 80 S. Washington Street and one at 186 S. Washington Street. We can see that the prices for Thanksgiving in 1940 appear to be much lower than they are today, but people took home smaller paychecks back then too. The 5-pound Jane Parker Fruit Cake that’s at the bottom of the ad is priced at 99 cents, but today, that fruit cake would cost you $19, and the turkey priced at 27 cents a pound would be $5.13 today.
