[Parenting Tip] Want to encourage your child’s independence?

The other day at a playdate, my child asked me to open his snack. I almost did it for him.

Instead, I paused and said, “How about you try one time first?”

He struggled for a few seconds… then got it.

It’s often faster to step in. But when we do, we miss small chances to build independence.

“Try one time first” can start with simple things like putting away laundry, helping in the kitchen, or feeding a pet.

It may take longer. It may be messier.

But those small attempts build confidence, resilience, and lifelong self-reliance.

[Parenting Tip] Is your child stuck in a complaining loop?

When my son started complaining at the ice cream shop, I’ll admit…it got under my skin.

They were out of Stracciatella—his favorite—and suddenly nothing else was good enough.

That’s when I shared the idea of the Complaining Bridge.

“We all complain sometimes, and that’s okay,” I told him. “But the more we do it, the stronger that bridge gets until it feels like the only way through a hard moment.”

Then I offered another option: the Grateful Bridge.

I told him that maybe this was a chance to discover a new favorite flavor.

And that every time we look for what’s still good, we strengthen the Grateful Bridge.

The stronger it gets, the more naturally we use it—even when things don’t go our way.

Sometimes our job is simply to help our kids shift from what’s wrong to what’s still possible.

[Parenting Tip] Avoid saying “You’re fine”

Just the other day at a playdate, one of the kids fell and banged his knee pretty hard.
His mom paused for a second, watching his reaction, then calmly walked over and said:
“Wow, that was a big fall…”
And then—she waited.
Her son cried for a bit, processed the moment, and after a minute or two, went right back to playing.
I wanted to give that mom a giant high five.
Because we’ve all seen situations like this go a different way—especially when parents fear a public meltdown.
Instead of pausing and listening, many parents rush in with: “You’re fine.”
Or they try to minimize it: “It’s just a little bump.”
But here’s the problem with that:
When we tell an upset child,​“You’re fine,” or “That’s not a big deal,” they don’t feel comforted. They feel unheard.
They start doubting themselves, thinking, I feel pain, but my mom says I’m fine…
So next time your child experiences a physical or emotional hurt, pause and let them tell you how they really feel.
This approach strengthens your connection, teaches emotional intelligence, and validates your child’s experiences.

Yes, parents, you read correctly: you get a night without children! Why scramble for a sitter and pay a costly amount, when you can bring your children to P.N.O. at Journey?

Date: FRIDAY, APRIL 10 (Register by April 8 at midnight)
Time: 5:30-8:30PM
Ages: Infants to 5th grade
Cost: $5 per child for the night or $15 max per family. Pizza dinner, snack and craft included!
