Shavuot celebrates the giving of Torah, often described as black fire on white fire. Yet over the past week, we witnessed real fire consuming acres, while firefighters risk everything to protect us. This morning I came across fire fighters’ staging area as the continue to work for our safety. As we honor the eternal flame of Torah, we must also express deep gratitude for those who keep destructive flames at bay. Let’s reflect on both types of fire—and on the community they shape.
