It’s time to discuss the origins of Reformation Day vs. Halloween. We must consider the truths vs. tradition. A lot of questions have come up lately about several religious holidays, so I think it’s time to clear up some things.
The term ‘Halloween’ is actually Celtic known as ‘Hallowed Evening’, but the ritual practices originated in Mexico, traced back 2,500 years ago, to Aztec rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors. Skulls were commonly kept as trophies and displayed during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth. It was originally observed during the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, roughly the beginning of August and was celebrated for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the goddess ‘Mictecacihuatl’ known as the "Lady of the Dead", corresponding to the modern Catrina. This ritual morphed into the modern ‘Day of the Dead’.
MAKE NO MISTAKE! ALL of these ideas and practices ARE at the door of ‘idol worship’! Be aware that whether ancient or modern these traditions ‘violate’ God’s 1st and 2nd commandments!
The beliefs of this ‘Pagan’ ritual were embraced by the early Catholic Church and eventually moved to November. In most regions of Mexico, November 1 is to honor deceased children and infants, and November 2 was to honor deceased adults. Generally referring November 1 mainly as ‘Día de los Inocentes’-Day of the Innocents, later termed ‘Día de los Angelitos’-Day of the Little Angels. November 2 was called ‘Día de los Muertos’ or ‘Día de los Difuntos’-Day of the Dead!
These beliefs held that the children make an altar and place favorite foods and other items of the deceased upon it, to invite the spirits of dead children-‘angelitos’ to come back for a visit on November 1, and in like manner, the adult spirits will come to visit on November 2, on November 3 they would celebrate ‘the family coming together, known as ‘All Souls Day’. This is when families go to the cemetery to decorate the graves and tombs of their relatives. It became a three-day fiesta filled with marigolds - ‘flowers of the dead’ and mu***os - ‘the bread of the dead’; sugar skulls; cardboard skeletons; tissue paper decorations; fruit and nuts; incense, and other traditional foods and decorations.
Very similar rituals spread into many Central and South American Countries, in Haiti, Indonesia, Fiji, Philippines, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. BTW, this is also where the idea of ‘zombies’ comes from.
ALL of these rituals strictly FORBIDDEN by God’s Word!
*Deut.18: 9 “When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
MAKE NO MISTAKE! These things are the very root of ‘necromancy’, which is a form of witchcraft!!! And they are an abomination to God! And because many Israelites learned to do after the same things, they came under God’s judgment! He specifically told them
*V10 “There shall not be found among you any one that…”
Whether we believe it or not, whether you think you are justified in such activities or not, when you participate in such things there is a great possibility that you are opening the door to ‘evil spirits’ and demonic influences!
In 1517, Martin Luther had received a fresh revelation of truth from the Word of God, which began the whole ‘Reformation’ era. The Catholic Church had become corrupt, with the observance of these rituals, including the additional beliefs that they could buy and sell positions, forgiveness and places in heaven.
Luther, as a Master of Arts and Lecturer at Wittenberg University, wrote a letter to the Archbishop of Magdeburg, protesting the sale of indulgences (liquor) by the Catholic Church leadership to the poor, taking advantage of their ignorance, to rebuild St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Within this letter were 95 points of contention he had against the Catholic Church doctrines and beliefs.
It was the custom of the Wittenberg University to POST any disputation upon the door of the ‘All Saints Church’, also known as ‘Castle Church’. Hence what is now known as ‘All Saints Day’, as opposed to ‘All Souls Day’ – the pagan ritual embraced by the Catholic Church!
Luther’s letter became known as ‘Luther’s 95 Theses’. It was quickly translated from Latin into German and printed, and widely copied, making the controversy one of the first in history to be aided by the printing press. Within two weeks, copies of the theses had spread throughout Germany; within two months Luther's writings had circulated throughout Europe, reaching France, England, and Italy as early as 1519. People thronged to Wittenberg to hear Luther speak about these disputations.
A ‘New Church’ was established in Regensburg and an order was posted stating ‘the reformation of the city’ is to be observed on the first Sunday after Oct.15. Churches in the Pomeranian states issued an order to observe reformation on St. Martin’s Day on Nov. 11. All the Protestant areas of Germany observed ‘Reformation Day’ on Nov. 11, on the 100th year of reformation in 1617.
The Lutheran Church then began regular annual observance of ‘The Festival of the Reformation’ on Oct.31, which was the day Martin Luther nailed His 95 Theses to the door of the All Saints Church, and they moved ‘All Saints Day’ to the first Sunday after Nov.1, to keep the days separate.
Martin Luther’s intended purpose for choosing Oct.31 was because He knew that thousands of Catholics would attend a mass the next day to worship the relics of dead-included in the Aztec ritual. These disputations would be read to all those in attendance.
A parallel concept arose in1745. Scottish and Celtic beliefs marking the end of harvest, celebrating the darker part of the years when spirits or ‘fairies’ would come back to their homes, termed as ‘Hallowed EVENING’, shortened to ‘All Hallows EVE’ and then supposedly to ‘Halloween’. These Celtic beliefs were extremely similar to those of the Aztec rituals. And where much of the confusion of the name of the holiday started! Obscuring the Reformation Day in 1517!
MAKE NO MISTAKE! These Scottish and Celtic beliefs and rituals ARE still directly associated with ‘idol worship’! And when you participate in such things there is a great possibility that you are opening the door to ‘evil spirits’ and demonic influences!
In any case, for the Christian believer, I personally believe if we honor anything in Oct. it should be honoring the significance of REFORMATION which brought about the REVIVING of ‘true Christian values and beliefs’ that had long since been forgotten. We should be worshipping God who made this revival possible! Because it’s not about Catholic, Luther or Calvin or any other person! It’s about CHRIST who made eternal salvation possible in the first place!
So with that said, we need to understand the difference between consciously accepting and believing in Christ, which is ‘foreign’ to our carnal nature, AND blindly following human traditions whether it’s Halloween, Christmas or Easter, or any other holiday.
The devil is a Master of deception, the ‘father of lies’ and he subtly uses tactics of normalization to desensitize our conscience; blurring the lines that GOD has already drawn! We don’t have to officially invite him in, or formally open the door for him, because there are plenty of pit-falls, snares, hidden dangers and deceptions floating around out there!
Many are struggling with the moral dilemma of what’s right and wrong on the issue. I talked to a lot of students and parents, on the bus and out in the community. Some undecided, some confused, some stuck in tradition, some judging others for doing or not doing certain things, and some in stubborn defiance! And some getting ‘bent out of shape’ because I’m telling the truth to people! Regardless of where you might stand concerning these things, we ALL need the TRUTH about the issues so that we can make the ‘right’ decision on all the levels of our life. Especially concerning our relationship with God and our eternity!
There’s an old story about putting a frog in a pot of hot water and he’ll jump out, but put him in lukewarm water and gradually turn up the heat and he won’t even realize that he’s been cooked! And it works the very same way with the spiritual issues that we can’t see or put in our hands! And many people are getting trapped in their own trap because they will not take heed to God’s truths and they simply make their own choices based on their own ‘common sense’ and ‘human reason’, which causes us to set up our own moral standard and reject God! THAT puts us in a dangerous position; because we exalt our own selves above God! You may not think it’s such a serious issue, but I assure you, IT IS!!!
In this day that we live we need to, “Keep it REAL! Keep it CHRIST!!!”
For The Harvest,
