Verse in context: John 14:28

“You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.”

Jesus statement that the Father is greater than He has generated plenty of confusion throughout the centuries. But the context is important for fully understand what he is saying.

Jesus speaks these words to his disciple in the upper room on Maundy Thursday. He is preparing them for both his sacrifice on the cross and his ascension into heaven. Naturally, the disciples would not like the idea of Jesus leaving, but Jesus is here assuring them that it is good. Why? Because the Father is greater than I, he says.

Jesus does not say this because he is not equally God with the Father; he certainly is, as demonstrated repeatedly in Scripture. Instead, he is speaking during his state of humiliation, when his human nature was not fully using all his divine powers so that he would be able to die on the cross for the sins of the world. Soon, though, he would ascend into heaven and make full use of those divine powers for the benefit of the church. So even though Jesus has visible left us, it’s good news! Because our brother, Christ, is making full use of the same power his Father has for us right now.

Psalm 124:

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”
Let Israel now say—
2 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
3 Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;
4 Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have gone over our soul;
5 Then the swollen waters
Would have gone over our soul.”

6 Blessed be the Lord,
Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
