Thompsonville First Baptist Church

Thompsonville First Baptist Church During the 129 year span, progress has been sure but often painful. Progress has seen a small frame building to a large brick building.

History of Thompsonville First Baptist Church

On September 23, 1879, eight dedicated Christian men and women met at Thompsonville, Illinois, and with the aid of council representing five area Southern Baptist Churches, organized themselves together in a covenant relationship, adopting the Articles of Faith set forth in the Franklin Baptist Association. From quarter time preaching to a full time P

astor, Bi-vocational Associate Pastor and Youth Director, Bi-vocational Music Director and a Secretary. One of the most painful times was experienced when the white frame church building burned to the ground on June 27, 1938. What followed is an absolute proof of indomitable spirit and a steadfast faith in God that prevaled in this church since its beginning. On April 30, 1939, less than one year later, a new brick building was dedicated. Then on April 30, 1940, another fire gutted the new building. On April 24, 1941, another dedication service was held. During the past 129 years, the most outstanding characteristics of Thompsonville First Baptist Church has been its desire to serve God and our fellowman, always seeking the leadership of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in whatever we do.

"Peter, from Fishing to Ministry
Our Hope in Christ"
1 Peter 1
For the next few weeks we are going to be studying the writings of the apostle Peter. Peter was an unusual individual that God developed into a great orator and minister of the gospel. He had little education, was a common man, a fisherman, but God used him in an unusual way. Unlike his counterpart, the apostle Paul, God developed him into a spiritual leader in the early church that affects even us today. God does not call the equipped but rather equips those he calls. Peter is a prime example of Godโ€˜s ability to do unusual things with common people.
Peter's writing of the two books under his name, are the only books written by the apostle Peter in the New Testament. Yet as we look at the the two books that he has written, we see that he has become a spiritual giant, understanding the great truth of the gospel. We will look at these in the next few weeks to learn from this common man that had great spiritual insights.
In the first chapter of 1 Peter, he gives a clear presentation of the gospel. He states that thru the resurrection of Christ, we have a hope of an inheritance reserved in heaven for those that trust Christ.
One point that Peter makes is the genuineness of our faith is more precious than fine gold. This hope we have in Christ is the only hope we have for eternity. I ask many if they are going to heaven and they say they are working and doing good but my friend salvation is in Christ alone. Have you had the rebirth in Christ? Peter states that the end of our faith is the salvation of our souls. Have you been born again?
The second point that Peter makes is, pull up your pants and be obedient in your daily walk! Perhaps I should not be so blunt, but here Peter is very clear that we have a new life in Christ and that we should develop that life that identifies with a loving Savior.
Love for the brethren is one of the identifying marks of the Christian life. We should love God and other believers by coming together in worship. Is this characteristic real in your life? It is Godโ€™s desire for you!

Pastor Larry's thoughts on this Sunday's (5-31-26) message "Trusting in God's Plan". We would love to have you worship with us. Worship service begins at 10:45 AM. Sunday school classes, for all ages, begin at 9:30 AM. Refreshments (coffee, donuts, etc.) starting at 9:00 AM

"Trusting in God's Plan"
Psalm 10

The longer I live in this world and watch the degradation of society, the more I long for the return of Christ. As I read many of the Psalms written by David, I can relate to the struggles and many questions that David has about the whyโ€™s of the Christian life. In many of the chapters David laments the trails he was facing, while waiting on God to fulfill the plan for Davidโ€™s life. Saul had been rejected as king and David was the rightful man of God that Samuel had anointed to be king. It was actually 20 years before David took his rightful place as king of Israel.

It was during these 20 years that David was being pursued by Saul, that he wrote many of the Psalms. His life was in danger and he wondered why God allowed all of the trails he faced. We as Christians can relate to his question of ,why God? You and I, as Christians, struggle with the injustices that seemingly Godly people must endure.

First, let me make clear that troubles and problems are common to everyone. We sometimes think that because we are Christians, life is hard. Trials are common to all. But as Christians we should and do live on a higher plane and we live life from a spiritual position. David knew that God had ordained him as king but wondered why the delay in Godโ€™s plan. The Bible says that God will be a light unto our path but we want a headlight!

The first 13 verses of chapter 10 are a lament on the supposed fortune of the wicked. Everything that David writes I want to say, Amen! Please understand his questioning of his circumstances is not a sin. What he says is true. Sin is birthed when we lose sight of Godโ€™s presence in every life experience. David redeems himself in the latter portion of the chapter, when he says that God observes the way of the wicked and Satan is limited in time here on this earth.

We hold fast to the knowledge that God is aware and in control of everything. All that is required from us is to trust him. Sunday, I will give you a formula as to how to overcome discouragement and be living a victorious life in Christ. Hope to see you Sunday!

Pastor Larry's thoughts on this Sunday's (5-24-26) message "ForgivingA Slave". We would love to have you worship with us. Worship service begins at 10:45 AM. Sunday school classes, for all ages, begin at 9:30 AM. Refreshments (coffee, donuts, etc.) starting at 9:00 AM

"Forgiving A Slave"
Philemon

There are some great stories in the Bible where people were introduced to Christ, received him as Savior, and their lives were changed. These are
great stories but the reality is that sometimes the past of these saved sinners has been difficult and they have left behind many burnt bridges that
need to be repaired because of the forgiveness of God.
This week's message from Philemon is a practical story of restoration and responsibility.
The main character of this book is a runaway slave named Onesimus, who escaped from the presence of his slave owner Philemon. We don't know the
circumstances before Paul's writing of this, but we know that both Philemon and Onesimus had become Christians. Onesimus, a fugitive from his slave owner, was now a friend of the Apostle Paul and had received Christ as his savior. While Paul was discipling Onesimus, it became evident that
Onesimus needed to rectify his situation with his master Philemon.
Now I know what many would be thinking at this point, God has forgiven Onesimus of his sin, he is a new creature in Christ so the issue of his past
life is not important. But I believe that God has provided salvation and there are many times that we need to rectify situations in our life that may have been in our past as lost individuals. Conflicts in life are a reality and salvation does not vindicate us from dealing with them.
There are 2 individuals in this situation that must be part of the reconciliation. Paul obviously believed that reconciliation is necessary in this
situation and wrote this letter on behalf of Onesimus. He challenges Philemon on the basis of his relationship with Christ and the forgiveness he
found in Christ.
Notice that the success in this situation is based on Christ and not the feelings of the individuals. Our emotions and defensiveness must not take
second place to the will of God and His goodness to us. As a pastor, I view confict as the greatest obstacle to grow in the church. I know that sin is the greatest problem but unresolved conflict is SIN!
Would you, because of this message, consider allowing the Holy Spirit of God to search your heart in the days ahead for any unresolved conflicts in
your life? These conflicts may be many years old, maybe with family or business issues. Ask God to help you to resolve these problems for the glory of His kingdom.

Pastor Larry's thoughts on this Sunday's (5-17-26) message "Dealin' with the Devil". We would love to see you this Mother's Day. Worship service begins at 10:45 AM. Sunday school classes, for all ages, begin at 9:30 AM. Refreshments (coffee, donuts, etc.) starting at 9:00 AM

"Dealinโ€™ with the Devil"
Revelation 12:7-12

Have you ever thought that you have had dealings with the Devil? Well, if your answer is no, you donโ€™t know much about the devil and his demons. For you and I to be successful in our Christian walk you need to understand who the Devil is, what resources he has, and about his character. First, Satan is a creation of God yet we see in scripture that he rebelled against God in rebellion to who Jesus was. How foolish but is similar to what men do in rejecting God. In rebelling against God, a war broke out in heaven, Satan was defeated and cast out with a third of his followers. He was cast down to earth where he is today. Doing his dirty work in the hearts of men and sowing discord on planet earth. We see in the Garden of Eden that he is a deceiver, as he appeared as a serpent. He questioned the very words of God, and Adam and Eve took of the forbidden fruit and sin entered into the body and soul of mankind. He is a liar. Satan will tell you anything to cause you to doubt God and His authority. Have you ever had the thought that you have no value? My friend, that is Satan telling you that God doesnโ€™t care about you. Yet the Bible says that God knows when you were conceived in your motherโ€™s womb. He knows the number of hairs on your head. Satan is a liar! He is a short timer. Look at verse 12. Satan is angry because he has a short time on this earth before being cast into hell for eternity. Today as we look at our world it seems he is growing stronger. Social media, the entertainment world grows more wicked, the church grows complacent, and Satan's hold on the hearts of sinners grows stronger each day. But his day is coming! He is defeated! So here we are as Christians in a wicked world. How do we overcome Satan? Look at verse 11. By the blood of the Lamb, JESUS CHRIST! Dealing with sin and its effect on you and our world is great but we are more than over-comers because of the gift of the Holy Spirit within us. Also, we have the word of God (the Bible) that helps to remember that Satan is a defeated enemy because of Jesus. Today, I would challenge you to learn to recognize the difference between the voice of Satan and the voice of God. We have the power to rebuke Satan because of the shed blood of Christ. Take hold of this power and live
