"Peter, from Fishing to Ministry
Our Hope in Christ"
1 Peter 1
For the next few weeks we are going to be studying the writings of the apostle Peter. Peter was an unusual individual that God developed into a great orator and minister of the gospel. He had little education, was a common man, a fisherman, but God used him in an unusual way. Unlike his counterpart, the apostle Paul, God developed him into a spiritual leader in the early church that affects even us today. God does not call the equipped but rather equips those he calls. Peter is a prime example of Godโs ability to do unusual things with common people.
Peter's writing of the two books under his name, are the only books written by the apostle Peter in the New Testament. Yet as we look at the the two books that he has written, we see that he has become a spiritual giant, understanding the great truth of the gospel. We will look at these in the next few weeks to learn from this common man that had great spiritual insights.
In the first chapter of 1 Peter, he gives a clear presentation of the gospel. He states that thru the resurrection of Christ, we have a hope of an inheritance reserved in heaven for those that trust Christ.
One point that Peter makes is the genuineness of our faith is more precious than fine gold. This hope we have in Christ is the only hope we have for eternity. I ask many if they are going to heaven and they say they are working and doing good but my friend salvation is in Christ alone. Have you had the rebirth in Christ? Peter states that the end of our faith is the salvation of our souls. Have you been born again?
The second point that Peter makes is, pull up your pants and be obedient in your daily walk! Perhaps I should not be so blunt, but here Peter is very clear that we have a new life in Christ and that we should develop that life that identifies with a loving Savior.
Love for the brethren is one of the identifying marks of the Christian life. We should love God and other believers by coming together in worship. Is this characteristic real in your life? It is Godโs desire for you!
