Read Genesis 1:1-2:4a, Psalm 8. Creation: Gods love in action. From the very first verse of Scripture, God comes at us not with safe, domesticated word but with an act- audacious, creative risk-laden act. In the beginning God created. Why? Not out of necessity, not out out of boredom. But out of love--wild, world making love. Reation is the first sign that ours is a God who refuses to be God without us. That is good news. Because if God loved the world into being, then we can trust that same love is holding us now

Reas John 20:19-23 and Acts 2:1-21. Encouraging Breath. Today's church finds itself on the midst of some daunting challenges. The religious culture of North America is shifting. A higher percentage of Americans say they disbelieve in God, have no interest in affiliating with a religious institution, and report having no inclination to seek the ministrations of the church. Many local churches are struggling. There is great fear in scores of congregations. What does the future hold? Will our church survive? It is therefore a great time for the church to receive encouragement from our conviction that Jesus Christ has not only risen from the dead, but he has also returned to us, breathing his life giving spirit upon us, telling us we need not fear.

Read Acts 1:6-14 and John 17:1-11. Left not Alone. It is tough out there. We try to be faithful, try to live as Christians in a world that often could careless. And yet, here is the gospel truth: we aee not in this alone. Jesus is praying for us. That is not sentimental language. That is a message of this Sunday's gospel. In a world full of rival gods and rival gospels, where faith can feel like a fragile, flickering flame, Jesus is interceding--right now--for you, for me. When it is easy to believe in the safety of the Sanctuary, but harder when you are in the boardroom, the classroom, or scrolling thru the headlunes--Jesus is praying. The church is here, rhe Spirit is here, Jesus is here--praying us into faithfulness.
