Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, St. John’s Historic Cemetery was founded in 1843 and is a resting place for people of numerous faiths and origins. Veterans who served in wars from 1812 to the present rest under the oaks described as a peaceful oasis in the middle of an urban town. Surrounded by ancient live oak trees, numerous tombs from the 19th and early 20th centuries lie in

various degrees of deterioration. The restoration of the tombs, maintenance of the grounds, oak trees, and of the 100-year–old iron fence is an ongoing challenge. The St. John’s Historic Cemetery Association is a charitable, 501(c)3 organization separate from St. John’s Episcopal Church. The Association is committed to honoring the past and telling the story of the cemetery in a contemporary and engaging manner. Many significant figures of Louisiana history are buried here.
