Job Description
Job Title: Custodian/Sexton Reports To: Board of Trustees
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Classification Status: Part Time
(12 ½ Hours Weekly)

Job Summary
The custodian/sexton is responsible for ensuring that the church property and its
surroundings which include the buildings, walkways and stairs, as well as
the parking lot, are kept clean, neat, uncluttered and well maintained, at all
times.
Performs related duties assigned or as needed.
Essential Job Functions
• Make small repairs promptly
• Report large repairs to the President of Trustees or designee promptly
• Maintain the social hall in a neat and orderly way ensuring that the tables and
chairs are in their respectful places, or stored away, as appropriate
• Empty all waste baskets, trash bins and recyclable containers regularly; bag
trash, package recyclable waste, and put out on curb for pick up on designated
days
• Keep parking lot, yard and sidewalk free of debris
• Replace non-functioning or broken light bulbs and switches
• Clean kitchen appliances, floors and walls
• Order cleaning and maintenance supplies
• Meet with trustees or the appropriate designee quarterly or at earlier intervals,
as needed
Perform the following duties weekly or as needed:
• Dust sanctuary furniture and brush and/or vacuum pew cushions,
• Mop floors and vacuum carpet
• Wash and/or sweep stairs
• Clean, polish and buff all tile floors
• Clean bathrooms and maintain in a tidy manner.
• Clean windows, windowsills and dust bookshelves
• Assist with setup for monthly, weekly and/or special meetings of various church
organizations.
• Open and close the building for special occasions and ensure security
Other Functions
• Perform other related duties required for the proper maintenance of the church, as
designated by the Trustees or their appointee
Job Standard/ Experience
Previous job-related experience, advantageous
Physical dexterity – ability to stand, stretch, pull, bend, kneel
Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
