The Connection Church

The Connection Church We are a “Big Little Church” going beyond ourselves to reach others for Christ. You matter!

Karibu is a Swahili word which means welcome and is how we hope you feel when you spend time with us at The Connection. You are important to God and to us, and we believe that you deserve to be a part of a church family where you can connect and where you can grow. We are sometimes asked if The Connection is a church or a coffee shop and our answer is, Yes! We are both, we are The Connection Churc

h and the Coffee Connection, and each part of this ministry gives us opportunities to connect with people. The Connection is a church with a family spirit; one of the most common things we hear from those who visit is, “we felt welcomed into a loving place.” We would love to have a chance to welcome you into our family and to invite you to join us on a journey of discovering who Jesus Christ is and what he can do in your life. “Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”
Romans 13:11-12 ESV

I have never known a sleep-walker, one of those people who get up during the night and goes around doing things without any remembrance of it the next day. I will confess though that there have been a few times when I was driving that I apparently was in a daze and when I snapped out of it I was startled to see how far down the road I had traveled with no awareness of having driven that portion of my journey. (Makes you a little nervous to drive around me doesn’t it?) I think about sleep-walkers and my driving experience and realize that it is the way we walk out our faith at times. We go through our routines, we travel our journey, but there is no connection with the presence of God. It is time for God’s people to awake to His presence and to stop sleep-walking through this faith journey that should be the most amazing journey a person could ever take.

Over the years I have heard some tremendous men and women of God sharing their call to get back to the reality of our walk with God, to remember who He is and to be filled with the presence and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. When we sleep-walk our faith journey we are subject to the works of darkness; it is time for all of us who call on the name of the Lord to wake up, “put on the armor of light,” and become the men and women who will turn our world right side up through the outpouring of the Spirit of the Living God.

To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. (Proverbs 21:3 ESV)

When I was taking Western Literature in college I struggled with the portion of the class dealing with poetry. I would read the poems over and over and diligently write my paper on what I thought was the meaning of the poem. Sometimes I would feel like I really did great, but only to find out that the teacher believed I had missed the point. I was working very hard; in fact you could say I was sacrificing diligently, but even though I was pouring Into my effort, I wasn't doing all the teacher wanted.

I think the Psalmist is talking about a similar issue. Sacrificing your time, your talents, and your finances may be a noble thing full of great intentions, but sacrifice alone is not what God desires; what is required of us is "righteousness and justice." We are called to do what aligns us with the will of the Father, and what will bring glory and honor to his name. If self-chosen sacrifice alone was enough to make us acceptable to God then su***de bombers would be the best of all people, but there is no righteousness and justice in that kind of act.

How do we discover the right choices and direction to take? We must be intimately connected to the Father, we must know and study His word of truth, and we must stay connected with others who are walking the path of righteousness and justice so we don't get trapped in poor interpretation. There is a way that leads to life, and God is faithful to reveal that to you.

“For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?” Romans 10:13-14 ESV

Ever once in a while I see where some atheist, or agnostic makes a complaint that Christians have no business going around telling other people about Jesus. They argue that they don’t go around telling others not to believe, so Christians should follow their example. What they are terribly missing out on is that we don’t share our faith to aggravate, we share our faith as people sharing the story of the greatest gift we have ever received. We are people who realized we were dying and were suddenly and miraculously given a new and better life. We don’t share our faith because we want to aggravate, we share our faith because we truly care.

I have shared this story before to give perspective. If I was on one of the rock groins off the beach in Galveston and spotted someone struggling in the water, looking like they may drown, I have two options; I could call out and politely ask if they wanted me to help, or I could just take a life ring and toss it to them and give them what is needed to save them from death. When we share our faith, we are throwing out spiritual life rings in an honest desire to save a life. If we won’t, than who will? I would rather be rejected ninety-nine times than miss the one who will hear the good news and live.

“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight. Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.””
Proverbs 4:7-9 ESV

Wisdom is an interesting thing to consider; we often place that as an adjective to describe someone who has a certain degree or who has attained to a certain position. But Godly wisdom is defined differently, it is seen as the appropriate application of knowledge, deeply rooted in the fear and respect of God. So it goes far beyond what can be learned in a book or classroom, it adds the discernment of God’s will and purpose into the circumstances of life. A person of true Godly wisdom recognizes the need to allow God to direct, interpret, and bring direction.

I think of Solomon and what happened in his life. He began his reign humbly recognizing his reliance on God, and God blessed him with great wisdom. He made decisions that seemed to amaze those around him. But later things changed, he seemed to be less focused on the wisdom of God and more focused on worldly actions and attitudes, even turning to the worship of idols. When that happened, the decisions he made began to be destructive rather than wise. We are told to get wisdom, and prize it highly. If we will keep that admonition we can walk in God’s blessings and promises for our life.

“Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:” Proverbs 1:20-21 ESV

Have you ever been in a really noisy environment and tried to communicate with someone? At one time I worked in an industrial facility where the noise was loud enough that you either used hand signals or you got close enough to speak directly into their ear. I think of this when I read this passage; there is always loud distracting noises that bring confusion and difficulties into our lives. The noises of job, finances, family issues, marriage struggles, entertainment, and many others. These things speak so loudly into our life that we don’t always listen for or hear the voice of wisdom that is trying to speak through all that noise.

What is the answer? We can’t always make the noise go away, it always seems to be persistent in its call upon our lives. I think the answer is always that we have to focus intently to discover the sound of the still small voice of God. He seldom bellows out his voice in such a way that it drowns out everything else. It seems to me that God doesn’t want to compete with the world, he wants us to choose to turn our attention to him and to seek the wisdom that he is so willing to offer. God’s wisdom does call out, but it is not loud and obnoxious, it is clear and pure. Let open our ears and our spirits to the wisdom he is offering.

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:3-4 ESV

I am not a big fan of zombie movies, but I have seen a few over the years. They show people who have some appearance of being alive, but they are dead people going through an existence focused only on what they can get from the living. In my not so deep theological thinking, I think that is what has happened with those who were baptized but weren’t really willing to give up the old life with it’s desires and it’s control over their actions. They move among those who are alive in Christ seeking what will benefit them or make them look better in the eyes of others.

Christ did not call us to walk as the living dead, he called us to die to our old life with it’s passions and desires. Our baptism is not a symbolic act that we go through to impress or please others, it is meant to be a transformational experience where we truly die spiritually to our old attitudes and actions, and come out of the water reborn into a powerful desire to honor God with our life. Perhaps we all have a little of the zombie spirit in us, but it is time for that old spirit to die. I believe God is moving in his church, preparing his bride, and the dead are being called to new life. It’s not time to cast out spiritual zombies, it’s time to show them the way to life in Christ.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,” Romans 3:23-24 ESV

I can’t count the times I’ve heard someone self righteously say, “I am a good person,” as a justification that surely God would find them worthy. It is one of those struggles with reality that most of us deal with; we all want to think of ourselves as nice people. We don’t compare ourselves to perfection, we compare ourselves to someone who is obviously living what we consider to be a sinful life. Since we’re so much better than them we must be a great person. I used to explain it like this; I could declare that since my neighbor beats his wife every day and I only beat mine once or twice then I must be a good husband.

There is only one problem with this view, none of us is really that good, and comparing ourselves to a worse sinner than ourselves is a poor measuring stick. I usually look at it this way, if I can’t say I am as righteous as Jesus then I am in need of the justification that only comes through accepting his work of redemption in my life. It is an amazing gift of God that he has made a way for sinful people to be able to be set free from the penalty of sin and to enter into the joy of the Lord. It is a gift worth accepting!
