Please join us in welcoming Mr. Kris Marshall to the First United Methodist Church family by transfer of membership!

We are excited and thankful that Kris has officially become a part of FUMC Texarkana. His dedication is evident as he faithfully makes the drive from Hope to worship and be involved in the life of our church.

Originally from the great state of Nebraska, Kris spent his career in truck driving.

We are grateful that God has led Kris to our church family and look forward to growing in faith together. Be sure to introduce yourself and extend a warm FUMC welcome the next time you see him!

Welcome home, Kris! ❤️✝️

From the Heart: The Artistic Journey of Debbie Nicholas

Local artist and educator Debbie Nicholas has been creating art for as long as she can remember. Her artistic journey began at the home of her beloved Mamaw, Esther Lee Watson, where a young Debbie first picked up a pencil. Before long, she progressed to paint-by-number kits and discovered a lifelong passion for creativity.

One of the treasures featured in her current exhibit is an early painting titled Still Life, completed when Debbie was only three years old. Her Mamaw wisely preserved the artwork, recognizing even then the budding talent of her granddaughter. Debbie recalls carefully applying paint in thin layers so that every drop could be saved and reused in her sketchbook—an old telephone book that served as her first art journal.

Growing up in Texarkana, Debbie often found herself breaking barriers. While attending College Hill Junior High, she was frequently the only female student in her art classes. She later studied under respected art educator Jo Morgan at Arkansas High School and participated in an Explorer Scout troop focused on art, where visiting artists shared techniques and inspiration.

After graduating from high school in 1976, Debbie began her college studies at Texarkana College under the guidance of Mary Long and Ralph Caver. Although she initially transferred to Southern Arkansas University as an accounting major, her love for art ultimately led her back to the classroom as an art educator. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in Art and later continued her studies at Texas A&M University–Texarkana and Henderson State University, receiving a Master of Science in Instruction and Art.

Throughout her career, Debbie taught art and mathematics and coached a variety of sports, positively influencing countless students. Even after retiring in 2020, she has remained active in education, teaching art appreciation courses at UAHT and Texarkana College.

Today, Debbie continues to share her passion for the arts as owner of Gallery 1894, where her work and dedication to creativity inspire new generations of artists. Her exhibit, From the Heart, reflects a lifetime of learning, teaching, and creating—a testament to the enduring power of art and the importance of nurturing talent from an early age.

"In 1886, the people of France gifted the Statue of Liberty to the United States as a symbol of liberty, friendship, and the shared hope that all people are created with God-given dignity and rights. Three years later, in 1889, Americans presented this smaller replica of the Statue of Liberty to France as a gesture of gratitude and enduring friendship.
Together, these gifts remind us that freedom is both a blessing and a responsibility. Rooted in the faith of our fathers, true liberty flourishes when hearts are guided by faith, virtue, and trust in God. As the light of Liberty shines across the seas, it calls each generation to cherish freedom, defend human dignity, and live according to the timeless truths that make a people truly free."
