And why stand we in jeopardy every hour? I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not?

Let us eat and drink;
for to morrow we die.

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
~1 Corinthians 15:30-34

"Do not be decieved: Evil company corrupts good habits" (v. 33, NKJV). This is a reminder to choose your company and your friends wisely. We are all prone to stray from the righteous path, unless we "die daily" like Paul did (v. 30). To die daily means to recognize that we are all selfish, wanting our needs met now. But we must daily commit the desires of the flesh to God and ask Him to renew our minds and resist the corrupt teachings that the evil one brings into the church.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; that is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
~Romans 1:8-12

We must live life in such a way that our faith can be spoken of throughout the whole world. That was quite a compliment from Paul to the church in Rome. Do you thank the Lord for your Christian sisters and brothers of other churches? Do you find yourself longing to be with them? Paul expected that his visit would encourage them, and that they, in turn, would encourage him. My recurring visits to SDB ministries in Nicaragua encourage me as I witness the passion of the students, the numerical growth, and the building progress. I look forward each year to that mission trip. I pray my visits are also an encouragement to them.

So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the Lord. And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore. And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli marked her mouth. Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the Lord remembered her. Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord.

And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.
~1 Samuel 1:9-20, 25

Elkanah, a man of God, had two wives, and he annually worshiped and offered sacrifices to God. This does not mean he had God's approval. There are consequences to our actions when we disobey God. Notice the friction in the home. Hannah was despised by the other wife Peninnah, because she had no children. Notice the favoritism shown by the husband toward Hannah. Hannah sought God's blessings because she knew He held the key to her peace and that He is the only one who gives life. Today, turn to God when you need His comfort and blessings.

And Mary said,

My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded
the low estate of his handmaiden:
for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things;
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him
from generation to generation.
He hath shewed strength with his arm;
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats,
and exalted them of low degree.
He hath filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers,
to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
~Luke 1:46-56

Scholars believe Mary was between 14-16 years old when she gave birth to Jesus. Take the time to read and digest these words spoken by Mary (often called "The Magnificat") when she met with Elizabeth. These words were divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit, not words that a teenager would come up with on their own. Mary rejoiced in the Lord in advance of what He was going to do to deliver mankind, not only Israel. She rejoiced in God's deliverance of the poor and the weak and His ex*****on of justice on the rich and the mighty.

Shall I bring to the birth,
and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord:
shall I cause to bring forth,
and shut the womb? saith thy God.
Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her,
all ye that love her:
rejoice for joy with her,
all ye that mourn for her:
That ye may suck, and be satisfied
with the breasts of her consolations;
that ye may milk out,
and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

For thus saith the Lord,

Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream:
then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides,
and be dandled upon her knees.
As one whom his mother comforteth,
so will I comfort you;
and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
~Isaiah 66:9-13

Through the prophet Isaiah, the God who created all promised to comfort Israel. He compared His comfort to that of a mother with her newborn baby, offering hope and peace to His people. This was important to a people who were about to go through such harsh discipline that it may have seemed like God had turned His back on them. As believers, Jesus promised to send us the Comforter--the Holy Spirit--when He was going back to His Father (John 14:16). The disciples may have similarly felt like Jesus was abandoning them. But the Holy Spirit is always with us as our Comforter, just as a mother brings comfort to her child, providing hope, peace, safety, and security.
