As we celebrate Thanksgiving, I encourage you to practice a simple “gratitude rosary.” The practice is simple: go through a normal rosary, and on every bead, give thanks to God for a person, a grace, a thing. At the end of each “decade,” declare a hope you have by thanking God ahead of time.

This is a secret of Bl. Solanus Casey, a soon to be American-Franciscan saint. He was said to encourage others to thank God ahead of time, for whatever he would do.

I invite you to do this at the end of each decade: for example, “Jesus, thank you for bringing your peace and presence into my family’s thanksgiving celebration.” Or, “Jesus, thank you for showing up tomorrow at my doctor’s appointment.” These acts of grateful hope are ways to declare God’s loving presence and providence in every instance of our life.

May this prayer help your day of Thanksgiving be full of grace!

God of the invitation,
you knock upon the door of everyone's heart.
We seek the courage to open that door, for we know the responsibility of saying yes.
We humbly ask you for your wisdom to serve your church with compassion and acceptance.
We believe that when we say yes, you will provide the grace for the work ahead.
Give grace to those men and women who have dedicated their lives to constant service to your church.
Also give grace to those couples and single men and women who work for the church in their secular lives.
We ask all this through Christ our Lord and brother, who live and reign with you and the Holy Spirit.
