As we commemorate Juneteenth, we give thanks for the enduring human desire for freedom, dignity, and justice.

The Second Vatican Council taught that every person is created in the image of God and possesses an inalienable dignity that must be respected and protected. In Gaudium et Spes, the Church declared that “every type of discrimination… based on s*x, race, color, social condition, language, or religion is to be overcome and eradicated as contrary to God’s intent.”

Building on this teaching, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has repeatedly called racism a life issue and affirmed that every act of racial prejudice wounds the Body of Christ.

Today we remember the end of legalized human enslavement in the United States, give thanks for those who struggled for freedom, and recommit ourselves to building communities marked by justice, reconciliation, and the recognition of Christ present in every human person.

May we continue to grow as disciples who honor the God-given dignity of all people.
