Tempe Friends Meeting (Quakers)

Tempe Friends Meeting (Quakers) Tempe Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) http://www.tempequakers.org/ Welcome! Our Meeting for Worship is on Sundays at 10 am.

"In Harmony with Spirit" (singing before Meeting for Worship)
9:15 -9:45 am. First Day School (Sunday School) and childcare provided. Coffee and fellowship after rise of meeting. Who are the people of Tempe Friends Meeting? We are everyday people just like you. We have families, jobs, and elderly parents, and like you we struggle with life's problems. We are also a community and family. Some of us

were raised Quaker, most of us come from Christian or Jewish faiths, and some come from other faiths or none at all. Each of us is seeking their own way to know God. Tempe Monthly Meeting welcomes all people as full and equal members of our community, regardless of race, gender, ability, or sexual orientation. Please know that you are welcome among us unconditionally. How do Friends worship? It is in silence that we still our hearts and minds so that the Spirit of God may enter. This silencing, this waiting in expectancy, this listening for that which is deepest within – this is what Friends call worship. We seek a gathered stillness in our meetings for worship so that all may feel the power of God's love leading us and drawing us together. Other Ways to Look at Quakers

Over the years, Friends have been described with some of the following language: in our worship, we focus on the "Inner Light," or engage in silent prayer. Some of us contemplate or meditate during our worship. Our type of "church," which we call a Meeting, is often associated with others as a "Peace Church," as peace, non-violence and an opposition to capital punishment are often associated with Friends. You are welcome. Tempe Monthly Meeting welcomes you to come and join us in worship. You will be met by a "greeter" at the door who will answer any questions you may have. Dress is very casual. You may dress up if you like, but most of us dress down.

Memorial Service for Brianna Wells
Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 1:30p
Tempe Community Christian Church
1701 S. College Ave, Tempe

Brianna's memorial will be in the manner of Friends (Quakers); this means what occurs will largely be guided through the spirit of those attending. It will be partially programmed including a few people designated to speak, but most of the time will be open for us to hear the oral testimonies of remembrances and grief as we begin the healing process and look to find ways to carry Brianna forward in the months and years ahead.

ALL ARE INVITED - This coming Sunday April 21st
“This Land Was Your Land”
Seeking Right Relationship with Indigenous Peoples

Tempe Friends Meetinghouse
318 E. Fifteenth Street, Tempe, AZ 85281
Schedule:
Meeting for Worship (10am-11am)
Fellowship & Light Refreshments (≈11am-11:30am)
Workshop (≈11:30am-1pm)

A 90-minute workshop
Facilitated by Paula Palmer, Clerk
Indigenous Peoples Concerns Committee
Boulder CO Friends Meeting

In this workshop, we hear the voices of America's past–from the native peoples whose diverse societies spanned the continent, to the European popes and monarchs who authorized centuries of genocide–and the voices of today that are calling for healing, reconciliation, and right relationship among our peoples and with the land.

We offer this workshop in response to calls from indigenous leaders like James Anaya (above) and from the World Council of Churches. The workshop traces the historic and ongoing impacts of the Doctrine of Discovery, the 15th-century justification for European subjugation of non-Christian peoples. Our goal is to raise the level of our knowledge and concern about these impacts, recognize them in ourselves and our institutions, and explore how we can begin to “take actions that are appropriate to our local circumstances.” A Resource Kit offers suggestions for continued study, reflection, and action.

Workshop this Saturday, 3/30/13, 9a-3p:

Tempe Meeting is pleased to invite you to a workshop led by Marcelle Martin and focused on Rex Ambler's "Experiment with Light". Marcelle is the author of two Pendle Hill pamphlets, and worked directly with British Friend Rex Ambler to acquaint Friends in the US with the insights available through "Light meditation". Building on Ambler's deep reading of early Quaker writings and incorporating modern developments in psychotherapy, this easily-learned approach produces life-changing and life-affirming practical and spiritual results.

Marcelle has scheduled the workshop in two sessions. The 9 AM-12 noon session will introduce us to the background and basics. After we share a simple meal, the afternoon session will give us the chance to explore the application of the method and share our findings.

Please let Dave Nachman know if you plan to attend, so we can prepare enough soup, salad and bread to feed everyone. We'd love to fill the meetinghouse.

*Water Needed* - Tempe Community Action Agency and I-HELP have asked participating faith communities to collect bottled water for distribution to homeless persons during our hottest days. We are collecting bottled water at the Meeting House and Ruth Kearns will take it to TCAA at Escalante Community Center as it accumulates. Packages of 6, 12, or 24 are often put on sale at this time of year, and perhaps you can plan to buy some when you are shopping for groceries. The need is great, and TCAA is having difficulty keeping up with demand.

A Friendly reminder: The next I-Help dinner will be Friday, 8/3/12.

If you'll be joining the egg roll making this weekend and still need information related to the shopping, etc, please see Gretchen's recent post on our page.
