Tempe Church of Christ

Tempe Church of Christ Our vision is to Pursue a Life with God, Together. Will you join us?

Worship with us on Sundays at 10:00AM followed by a time of study and conversation for all ages after. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus spoke the words of the Hebrew prophet Isaiah in describing his ministry, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppresse

d go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor" (NRSV). We believe that the church, a group of anointed individuals serving as the vanguard of the kingdom coming to earth, should be about business similar to Jesus: bringing good news to the poor, freeing the captives, helping the blind see, speaking up for the oppressed, and proclaiming the kingdom of God.

We have had an incredible start to Holy Week! Thank you to everyone who helped make space for us to soak in the teachings of Jesus on his journey to the cross, and set a grand table to share the last supper with Jesus. We pray that you have been blessed through these experiences and we anticipate more to come this weekend!

Make plans to join us for our Good Friday service on Friday at 6:00 pm. We will have a special activity available for all children during the service to help them also reflect on Jesus’s death.

Then set aside time to spend time alone with God this Saturday at the Holy Saturday Silent Retreat. A Silent Retreat is any amount of time that is set aside to limit the distractions and noise of life in order to spend time with God. The goal is to quiet our bodies, minds, and hearts in order to turn our full attention to being in God’s presence. This time spent is essential to deepening our connection to God, practicing listening for God’s voice, and inviting God to transform our souls. On Holy Saturday, this practice also allows us to spend the day mirroring Jesus’ followers as they mourned his death and wrestled with hope in the space between death and resurrection.

The Education Building and grounds will be prepared with multiple spaces for you to rest in God’s presence. You are welcome to come for any amount of time between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks will be provided. A guide will be available with questions, spiritual practices, scripture, and reflections to help prompt your time with God. If this is your first silent retreat, we encourage you to set aside 1 to 3 hours.

Please note that we will worship at 9:00 a.m on Sunday instead of our normal gathering time of 10:00 a.m. This change is to make sure we beat the heat! We will be under shaded canopies and have evaporative coolers to make sure everyone is comfortable on Sunday. Come celebrate with us! Learn more at tempechurch.org/easter. (Link in Bio)

Next week marks the beginning of Holy Week and an invitation to journey with Jesus through the final days of his life. Together, we will explore Jesus’ final teachings, share a meal with him, mourn his death, and pause to be still in the space between death and resurrection. There is a place for you here to encounter Jesus again or for the first time.

Visit tempechurch.org/easter to learn more about this special week of remembrance and celebration! We can’t wait to journey together.

**Please note that our worship service for Easter will begin at 9:00 a.m. instead of our normal time of 10:00 a.m.

We are grieving with Tempe due to the destruction and loss caused by Monday’s storm. Everytime we move through the city, we are astonished by the signs of impact and loss. We pray for stronger bonds to be made between neighbors and for new connections to be forged in our city so that we can strengthen one another. We pray that we will embody God’s comforting presence and active hope through our responses in the coming days.

Our friends at the Tempe Community Action Agency are accepting donations of food and hygiene products that they are then making available to community members in need. In particular they are requesting: meats, eggs, instant potatoes, rice, beans, dried milk, and shelf-stable items.

Our church lost a beautiful tree that has faithfully shaded us through many seasons. We thank God for the tree’s protection of the pomegranate tree and the garden beds that grew beneath its branches, for the home it was to countless birds and squirrels, and for the reminders of God’s care it stretched over us for so many years.
