Getting Back on Track

A life apart from Jesus will never thrive. True fulfillment is found in Him.
Hebrews 12:1-3

Our Creator gives each of His followers the specific gifts, abilities, and resources necessary to live according to His purpose (Eph. 4:11-12). Sadly, many people drift through life without taking hold of God’s terrific plan for them, not realizing that in Him and Him alone true fulfillment is found.

There are also many followers of Jesus who walk with Him for a time but then get off track. This happens for a variety of reasons. Some become fainthearted and lose the desire to persevere through challenging circumstances. For others, worldly ideas and goals become distractions. Sports, hobbies, or simply busyness can also cause a believer’s heart to stray from Christ.

Regardless of the cause, any life separated from the only true anchor—Jesus—is in danger. God offers believers a full life in Him. But the Bible teaches that Christians will not thrive if they live apart from God’s Word, His principles, and an ever-deepening relationship with Him (John 10:10; John 14:6).

Are you walking closely with Jesus? Or have the cares of life entangled you? Pray for wisdom as you consider these questions. And if anything besides God holds first place in your heart, ask that He help you surrender it to Him. Then commit to pray, read the Word, and obey.

No Trial Is Beyond God’s Help

When difficulties arise, trust that the Lord will stay true to His promises.
Jude 1:24-25

Scripture is filled with many wonderful promises from the Lord, but we often struggle to accept them as true in our own life. God wants us to believe that He’s willing and able to do what He has said He will accomplish.

God assures us we don’t have to give in to sin (1 Cor. 10:13). Jesus experienced this truth when the Holy Spirit led Him into the wilderness for an encounter with Satan (Matt. 4:1-11). Our Savior successfully resisted the Devil’s enticements by recalling who the Father is and what He had promised.

The world we live in has a lot of traps, and they can be hard to detect. For example, Peter had a conversation with a servant girl and ended up denying that he knew Jesus Christ (Matt. 26:69-74). Like the disciple, we sometimes have trouble recognizing a situation’s potential danger, but our heavenly Father understands what is involved—and He knows just how we should respond.

When you face temptation or encounter an unexpected difficulty, the approach needs to be the same. Turn your attention to the Lord, and keep it there until your mind is filled with the knowledge of Him. Allow the Scriptures to guide your prayers, and stand firm until the promised help comes.

Our God Is Able

Jesus is our greatest example of unwavering trust in the Father through every circumstance.
Ephesians 3:20-21

Jesus knew what it meant to have limited financial resources, to have those closest to Him question His actions, and to be rejected by those He sought to serve (Matt. 8:20; Mark 3:21; John 6:66-67). Yet in spite of such opposition, He didn’t let circumstances affect His trust in the Father.

We’re called to follow Jesus’ example by believing that God is able to do what He’s promised. For instance, Hebrews 7:25 assures salvation for whoever comes to God through Jesus. The Father will pardon everybody who has genuine faith in His Son and will make each one a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). No matter what trouble a person may have caused, the Lord invites him or her to draw near in faith and receive the gift of everlasting life. God also promises to establish in truth everyone who trusts in Him (Rom. 16:25). Through His Word and Spirit, we start to see things as our Father does, which helps us understand what pleases Him.

By believing that God keeps His promises, we grow stronger in our faith and gain peace. Hardships that would once have thrown us off course lose their power. Hope replaces discouragement, and trust overcomes doubt. Next time trouble comes, focus on God’s promises and ability to care for you.
