“But I [Jesus] say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone hits you on the cheek, offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don’t hold back your shirt either. Give to everyone who asks you, and from someone who takes your things, don’t ask for them back. Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. If you do what is good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High. For he is gracious to the ungrateful and evil. Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭27‬-‭36‬ ‭CSB‬‬

“Let love be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Take the lead in honoring one another. Do not lack diligence in zeal; be fervent in the Spirit; serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord. But If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink. For in so doing you will be heaping fiery coals on his head. Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭9‬-‭21‬ ‭CSB‬‬

Putting on the ‘New Self’ as Paul described it to the church at Colossae:

“Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. But now you also, rid yourselves of all of them: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you stripped off the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created it— a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, and free, but Christ is all, and in all. So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also. In addition to all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ, to which you were indeed called in one body, rule in your hearts; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”

Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭17‬ ‭(NASB2020‬‬)

The idea that our faith produces works, overtime, has been translated to the idea that salvation itself is on a sliding scale- i.e. “backsliding.” The fundamental concept that we accept salvation, suggests that we can also reject it. Or more extremely, “return” it. This has been a debate amongst Christians for decades.

Whether you subscribe to the idea that salvation can or cannot be lost, one fundamental truth must be remembered: your works have never once saved you. Similar to the concept of acceptance implying possible rejection and pehaps loss, we can understand that if your works never saved you, this implies that a lack of works will not keep you saved. Or more extremely, “unsave” you.

Now, why is that important? For me personally, this revelation has become incredibly important for me as a person who grew up understanding my faith through the typical lens of a church kid. Your religion is what you’re born into, and so easily becomes only ever what’s given to you from the environment that builds you up. To be perfectly clear, raised in church with a structured faith is something I will never regret. And I am raising my son in church just as I was. However, when transitioning from church kid to a Christian adult becomes vital for having a relationship to God independently from your initial upbringing. And it should be the goal of any church who is raising up a generation of Christian youth. There is such a fear or insecurity that can come with working out your own salvation. To the point where you stop trying to work it out at all. You become anxious, then indifferent, and then just coast. This is where I’ve been the last few years. Recently I’ve thanked the Lord for being the better friend, but also repented for letting Him just because I know He would.

Working out your own salvation will absolutely not look the way everyone in your life wants it to. Hopefully, the people who love you will understand that. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Which only causes more issues for us as believers. Which is another reason why this revelation is so important. God is not waiting to take back His gift of salvation from you. We begin to allow the micromanaging and judgments of others to determine our salvation. To the point of telling us if we’re even saved or not.

Sadly, I am personally familiar with this which is why I am speaking on this. Ironically, it has been while I am actively making more room for relationship with God (not overworking myself for apparences’ sake) in my life than I ever have before. I have been accused of “falling away,” in disagreements with absolutely 0 biblical reference. Though I gave much biblical reassurance as to why my personal conviction was different than some others. I have been lumped in with “not real Christians” just the same. This is disguised as “brotherly love” or “just sharing the truth.” Had this been the case, my biblical evidence would have been enough to have a humble disagreement and carry on. Not be accused of “using Holy Spirit as an excuse to ignore God” (like we don’t understand they are one in the same anyways) just to be asked for money to support the same exact ministry a few months later as if they hadn’t publicly judged and accosted me several weeks prior. As the infamous New Testament author Paul once said, “this ought not be!” haha.

All of this to say one simple thing, God wants a relationship with YOU. God is not looking for another droid’s face in the crowd. The ones who are turned away from Him (“[…]depart from Me, I never knew you.”) are ones who swore they did the work, but had no relationship with Him. The one(s) who “[…]does the will of the Father” is the one(s) recognized as known by God. (Matthew 7:21-23) What is the will of God for our lives? “[…]and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8 ESV)

In the end, this is what matters. And the rest, all the fruit that faith bears, is just a continued work OF GOD. Not of us. Love God more than yourself, and people just as much; all of our religion hangs on simply that. (Matthew 22:39-40)

”Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and on the earth; Yours is the dominion, Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.“

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ (NASB2020)

2023 was a year of God bringing things full circle for our family so we can go into brand new things in 2024. Chapters end so new ones can be begin! Our hearts overflow at what God has done this past year, and seeing all that He can do in the new year. We are so excited to truly experience and walk in His promise of newness. He is good, all the time. All the time, He is good!
