As the Lord, through His living prophet, brings more houses of the Lord closer in more places, temple blessings work together for our good. We come by covenant and ordinance to God our Father and Jesus Christ and gain eternal perspective on mortality. One by one, name by name, we offer beloved family members—ancestors—sacred ordinances and covenant blessings in the Lord’s pattern of saviors on Mount Zion. Elder Gerrit W. Gong

I'm a believer in Emergency Preparedness. I've been asked by my local church to present an emergency shelter recommendation. If you speak to first responders along the Wasatch Front, the large scale event they train for is a 'when not if' scenario of an intense earthquake with the capacity to condemn most homes, hotels, motels and dwellings to the extent they become unsafe to occupy. If that were to happen in the dead of winter, even a large RV with propane heaters would only manage a week or two until you'd find yourself in a frosty and complicated situation. Additionally, travel from your home would be problematic due to the amount of bridges, overpasses, mountain and canyon passes closed from landslides.

My family has a self-contained RV that has solar. But in a situation like this, the cheapest and most reliable form of emergency shelter you could invest in is a durable tent that is capable of housing a wood burning stove in it.

This attachment is what I have invested in (if you're looking for a starting point). None of these are affiliate links. I'm not selling anything. It's possible there are cheaper sites out there (though I've intentionally looked for the best deals I could find).

Many people have emergency food and water, but shelter is often overlooked or passed-over due to expense or complexity. This is the cheapest shelter insurance you can likely own.

If you have a tool shed or a standalone structure outside your home, that would be an ideal storage area. If an earthquake of this magnitude were to strike, you'd have very little time to get out of your home. Having this stored away from the destruction would be a smart option.

What's awesome is this is a wonderful setup for family campouts and are durable for years of use and enjoyment. In fact the more you use and become acquainted with such activities, the better you will be at dealing with these elements in an emergency environment.

Dear Bennion Stake Family,

Over many years, we have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Bennion Jr High School, including an access point from the school to a church-owned seminary facility adjoining the Kamas Dr. Meeting House that historically served the freshman class. Over those many years, it’s been a wonderful benefit to also use that pathway as an unofficial means to pick up and drop off students or use it as an unofficial walking path for students and others in nearby neighborhoods.

Throughout those many years, we’ve also, unfortunately, experienced a great deal of church property vandalism, breaking and entering, theft, damage, and other profane activity. Unfortunately, with the seminary building now generally being vacant, the pattern of malfeasance has increased to such an extent we’ve been responding to property damage nearly every week.

The reality we face is the resources currently available are unable to curb this type of behavior which directly goes against the sacred nature of our Church buildings and property that are to be “used for worship, religious instruction, and other Church-related activities.” Additionally, we have been given the charge that “church standards should always be upheld on church property” while “every attempt should be made to ensure that each meetinghouse is safe and protected.” Please note that Church policy is such that security cameras are not an option for us.

After carefully considering- over the past eight months- any number of next steps, we’ve come to the very difficult decision to indefinitely close the gates and clearly display that this area in question is not intended to be a point of transit between the jr. high school and the Kamas Dr. Meeting House property. We understand some might not agree with this decision but do ask that all abide by it.

Each year the principal and community council identify safe walking routes for their students to get to school. Although the Kamas pathway has been a convenient one, it's never been official.

-The site that houses the designated "safe walking route" for Bennion Junior High School may be reviewed in detail here: https://www.saferoutesutahmap.com/map/school-maps/bennion-jr-high-school-160
