This past Sunday evening, our church family was blessed to hear Intern Luke Mattox preach from Isaiah 6 on what true surrender to God looks like. Luke did an excellent job opening God's Word and challenging us through the example of Isaiah's response to the holiness of God.

At Faith Baptist, we are intentional about training young men for ministry, and Luke's opportunity to preach is just one example of that investment. In today's Echoes of Faith newsletter, I share a little more about how our internship program works, including the preaching preparation and mentoring that takes place behind the scenes.

Be sure to check out today's newsletter to learn more about how we're seeking to train the next generation of faithful servants of Christ.

Title: The Heart of Surrender
Speaker: Luke Mattox
Series: Summer Interns
Date: June 14, 2026
Bible: Isaiah 6:1-8

This sermon, drawn from Isaiah 6:1–8, presents a transformative vision of God’s glory that leads to profound personal surrender. Centered on Isaiah’s encounter with the thrice-holy Lord, the message unfolds through three interwoven themes: the overwhelming majesty of God, the resulting conviction of human sinfulness, and the empowering assurance of divine cleansing through Christ. The preacher emphasizes that true surrender is not a one-time decision but a continual posture rooted in beholding God’s holiness through Scripture, which exposes our moral failure and humbles the self. Yet this humility is not the end—God, in grace, initiates purification, symbolized by the live coal, pointing to the atoning work of Christ, which removes sin and restores the believer to a state of purity. The ultimate motivation for surrender, therefore, is not guilt or fear, but the joyful confidence that one is cleansed and beloved, enabling a willing response of 'Here am I, send me.' The tone is both convicting and comforting, calling believers to daily reorientation toward God’s glory, holiness, and grace.

Title: Lessons From the Finish Line
Speaker: Caleb Phelps
Series: Shadow of the Shepherd King
Date: June 14, 2026
Bible: 2 Samuel 23:1-7

David’s final words in 2 Samuel 23 reveal a life shaped not by personal achievement but by divine sovereignty, humility, and unwavering trust in God’s eternal covenant. Far from boasting of victories or legacy, he identifies himself as a man raised up by God, anointed in covenant faithfulness, and sustained by the Spirit’s revelation—pointing beyond his own brokenness to the coming righteous King, Jesus Christ. In the face of fear, confusion, and the instability of his own house, David finds hope not in human performance but in God’s sure, everlasting promises, which remain unshaken by sin, failure, or uncertainty. His testimony is a call to recognize that true direction, peace, and confidence come not from self-reliance but from surrendering to God’s character and covenant, where the light of morning breaks through every night. Ultimately, David’s legacy is not in what he built, but in what God built through him—a testament to grace, redemption, and the enduring hope found only in Christ.

Title: Session 1 - Precreation Through Abel
Speaker: Dean Kurtz
Series: Worship & Music Thru Scripture
Date: June 14, 2026

This session centers on the divine origin and purpose of worship, rooted in the eternal glory of the Trinity, where God’s self-revelation in creation and relationship with humanity establishes worship as a response to His inherent majesty. It emphasizes that true worship is not human invention but a reflection of God’s eternal nature, expressed through language, music, and obedience, all of which were designed to magnify His glory rather than enhance human achievement. The narrative traces worship from its beginnings in Eden, where Adam and Eve communed with God, through the tragic fall initiated by Lucifer’s rebellion and humanity’s choice to exalt self over God, culminating in the first recorded worship of Cain and Abel, where Abel’s offering was accepted because it was given in faith and obedience, while Cain’s was rejected due to a heart devoid of relational integrity. The sermon underscores that successful worship is defined not by emotional experience or human approval, but by alignment with God’s revealed will, obedience, and a heart transformed by grace, culminating in a call to commit to worship on God’s terms and for His pleasure, trusting in Christ’s atoning sacrifice as the only means of restored fellowship.

Title: Celebration of Life - Benjamin Headley
Speaker: Caleb Phelps
Series: Memorial Services
Date: June 13, 2026

Celebration of Life - Benjamin Parks Headley
September 14, 1942 - May 17, 2026

This service honors the life of Benjamin Headley as a man whose existence was a living testament to faith, service, and unwavering love, rooted in a deep relationship with God and expressed through daily acts of compassion. Central to the message is the truth that while death brings sorrow and empty chairs, it is not the final word—Jesus, who wept at Lazarus’s tomb, entered human suffering to conquer it, offering hope through His sacrifice and resurrection. The sermon calls listeners to reflect on their own spiritual condition, urging repentance and faith in Christ as the only foundation for enduring hope amid grief. Through personal memories, biblical reflection, and the power of worship, the gathering affirms that life lived in service to God and others becomes a prayer of praise, and that one day, all tears will be wiped away in the eternal presence of the Savior who left His throne to make a place for us.

Title: Journaling Through Genesis - 1:3-5
Speaker: Caleb Phelps
Series: Journaling Through Genesis 1-3
Date: June 10, 2026
Bible: Genesis 1:3-5

The sermon centers on Genesis 1:3–5, emphasizing that God’s creative power is exercised through His spoken word, establishing light as the first act of forming a habitable world. It affirms a literal, 24-hour creation day, refuting the gap theory and evolutionary interpretations by grounding the account in divine sovereignty, the moral distinction between light and darkness, and the theological necessity of death entering the world only after Adam’s sin. The passage reveals God’s authority in naming and dividing creation, symbolizing His control over both physical and spiritual realms, and draws a powerful parallel to the spiritual new birth, where God’s light dispels darkness in the heart. The sermon concludes by connecting creation’s first day to the believer’s experience of salvation, where God’s command, 'Let there be light,' brings immediate, transformative revelation and eternal belonging.
