Sunday Sermon Recap:

You Should Have Listened

Scripture:
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." — James 1:22

Have you ever said, "I knew better"?

Most regrets don't come because we lacked information. They come because we ignored it.

The Bible makes a distinction between hearing and listening. Hearing happens naturally. Listening requires intention. It means giving attention to what is being said and responding with obedience.

Throughout Scripture, people suffered unnecessary pain because they refused to listen. Israel ignored God's warnings. Jonah ran from God's assignment. Even Paul warned those on the ship not to sail, but they chose their own judgment instead. The pattern is the same: whenever God's instruction is ignored, unnecessary storms often follow.

One illustration from the message stood out. Little Red Riding Hood wasn't in danger simply because a wolf existed. She got into trouble because she stopped to entertain the wrong voice. A conversation became a distraction. A distraction became a detour. (Like Adam & Eve)

The same is true spiritually.

Every day there are voices competing for our attention—fear, culture, pride, comfort, and temptation. Not every voice deserves a conversation. Sometimes the safest thing we can do is keep walking in the direction God already told us to go.

The encouraging news is this: even if you've taken a wrong turn, God is still a Restorer. His grace doesn't erase the importance of obedience, but it provides a way back when we've wandered. As long as we are willing to repent and return, He is faithful to lead us again.

Today, don't settle for hearing God's Word. Listen. Trust Him enough to obey, even when His direction doesn't make immediate sense.

One act of obedience can spare you from many unnecessary battles.

Reflection

- What instruction has God already given me that I've been delaying?
- What voices have distracted me from God's direction?
- What would obedience look like today?

Prayer

Father, give me ears that do more than hear. Give me a heart that listens and obeys. Quiet every distracting voice competing for my attention, and help me trust Your wisdom above my own understanding. Thank You that even when I've taken wrong turns, Your grace still calls me back. Today I choose to follow Your voice. In Jesus' name, Amen.
