A memorial service honoring Judy Love will be held on Saturday, September 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Waleska United Methodist Church.

• Psalm 82 — Protection of Others
• Isaiah 1:12–17 — Rectifying Injustice

As you read, consider this question:

If war is an evil to be avoided, what circumstances could make going to war justifiable?

Join us Sunday after worship (worship is at 10:00 a.m.) as we wrestle with Scripture, Just War Theory, and what faithful Christian discipleship looks like in a world where violence and injustice still exist.

Does the guy in the picture look familiar? That is Rev. Mark LaRocca-Pitts, retired elder in the North Georgia Conference, who has served as an Appalachian Trail Chaplain for the 2026 season.

What is an Appalachian Trail Chaplain? It is a unique ministry of the Holston Conference and a recognized ministry of the SEJ that has provided spiritual support to the hiking community for fourteen years.

What do you do? Chaplains are actively present to fellow hikers, providing a listening ear, words of encouragement, and a compassionate, non-judgmental presence.

đź“– God of War & Peace Bible Study Starts Tomorrow!

We’ll gather tomorrow after worship for our first Bible study session, “Peace → War → Peace: An Introduction to Just War & Pacifism.”

If you have a few minutes beforehand, I encourage you to read through the Scriptures below and begin thinking about the questions. You don’t need to come with all the answers—just come ready to read Scripture, ask questions, listen, and discuss together.

Consider: What do these three passages, taken together, tell us about peace, war, and God’s ultimate purposes for creation?

📖 Luke 10:25–37 — Love of Neighbor

Consider: What do you already know about Just War theory? What might be its strengths and weaknesses for Christians trying to faithfully follow Jesus?

📖 Matthew 28:16–20 — Kingdom Now

Consider: What do you already know about Christian pacifism? What might be its strengths and weaknesses?

đź“… Annual Planning Meeting This Sunday!

Everyone is invited to join us for Tate UMC’s Annual Planning Meeting this Sunday, August 23, directly after worship in the Fellowship Hall. We’ll plan to get started around 11:15–11:30 a.m.

If you serve on a committee, lead a ministry, or simply care about where God is leading Tate UMC, we especially hope you’ll join us!

This meeting is about more than just putting dates on a calendar. Together, we will:

Look at the ministries and events we already do and consider how we can make them even better

Dream about new ministry opportunities for our church and community

Consider some goals for the year ahead

Learn about a model of ministry that helps us think intentionally about the journey from someone’s first visit to becoming a disciple who makes disciples

And, of course, we’ll eat! Pastor Grant is making pulled pork sandwiches, so if you’re coming, please bring a side dish to share.

You don’t have to be on a committee to participate. All are welcome, and we want your ideas!

What does the Bible really say about war, violence, peace, and the Christian response to conflict?

This fall, join us at Tate United Methodist Church for God of War & Peace, a 12-week Bible study exploring Scripture, Just War Theory, Christian pacifism, peacemaking, justice, reconciliation, and what it means to follow Jesus in a violent world.

-Sundays, August 30–November 29, 2026
-Worship begins at 10:00 a.m.
-Bible Study begins around 11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall
-No study October 4 or October 18

You don't have to have all the answers—or even know exactly what you think. Come ready to study Scripture, ask difficult questions, and have meaningful conversations.

Tate UMC is invited to worship alongside Reinhardt students, staff, faculty, Waleska UMC, and our surrounding community as we celebrate the beginning of a new academic year!

Waleska UMC will help lead the music, and Reinhardt students will be singing with us throughout the service. Child care will also be provided.

The message, “The Places You’ll Go,” comes from Deuteronomy 3:23–29 and the transition from Moses to Joshua. We’ll reflect on what it means to encourage and strengthen the next generation, to learn humbly from our own successes and failures, and to dream about a future shaped by loving God and loving our neighbors.

Whether you are connected to Reinhardt, Tate UMC, or simply part of our community, you are welcome!
