Temple Judea Brotherhood

Temple Judea Brotherhood A social, dynamic and forward-thinking group of men, our mission is to make a difference in the life of our synagogue and the greater Jewish community.

Our diverse activities range from our monthly poker game and annual men’s retreat to providing gifts for every Bar and Bat Mitzvah child to being the grill masters of the annual Purim Carnival and Temple "Sha-BBQs." We strive to achieve Tikkun Olam, to make our world a better place. Temple Judea Brotherhood provides tangible and intangible gifts to our congregation. We provide scholarships for chi

ldren, from preschoolers to post B'nai Mitzvah, so they can participate in summer camps and retreats, as well as other important youth programs. We work with all Temple Judea auxiliaries and are represented at nearly every Temple event. Each year we provide Yom HaShoah candles for our entire Judea family, and we print and distribute the Temple Directory. We also engage in many social and sporting activities, including our International Tasting Series, poker games, and going to baseball, basketball and hockey games with our youth groups. In the past, we have put on major shows and dances, giving us the opportunity to develop friendships, network, have fun and feel more a part of the Temple community. All Temple Judea "brothers" are invited to join our group of friendly and dedicated men. Our monthly meeting is open to all Temple men and is held on the second Tuesday evening of every month. To find out more about our activities, please e-mail us at [email protected] and we’ll put you on our mailing list or get the name of a Brotherhood representative from the Temple office, (818) 758-3800, for more information. We promise you will experience the personal satisfaction that comes from doing good things for others simply because you can, and because it is the right thing to do, all while making lasting friendships.

80 years... six months... five days... we remember, and we pay tribute. Tonight, when you light your Yom HaShoah candle from Temple Judea Brotherhood, please read this blessing, in memory of the six million, and all of those who have fallen for the faith.

"As I light this yellow candle, I vow never to forget the lives of the Jewish men, women and children who are symbolized by this flame. They were tortured and brutalized by human beings who acted like beasts; their lives were taken in cruelty.

"May we be inspired to learn more about our six million brothers and sisters as individuals and as communities, to recall their memory throughout the year, so that they will not suffer a double death.

"May we recall not only the terror of their deaths, but also the splendor of their lives.

"May the memory of their lives inspire us to hallow our own lives and to live meaningful Jewish lives so that we may help to ensure that part of who they were shall endure always."

Am Yisrael Chai!

Once again, we mourn - in sadness, in anger, but not with surprise.

Fantastic conclusion tonight to our 2018-2019 Speaker Series with Women of Temple Judea – Bill Prady had a packed Chapel howling with laughter as he took us through the history of Jewish humor. Thanks to everyone who turned out!

Bill’s references:
- Mel Gordon was the UC Berkeley professor who studied the origins of “Jewish humor” in 17th Century Ukraine.
- Hannah Gadsby’s groundbreaking comedy special “Nanette” is on Netflix.
- Nell Scovell’s book is “Just the Funny Parts: ... And a Few Hard Truths About Sneaking into the Hollywood Boys’ Club.”
