"Rescue Me: The Moral and Community Value of Dog Rescue"

Presented By: Christine Smith and Mia Smith

In Unitarian Universalism, we often say that our faith is not about a shared creed, but a shared commitment - to dignity, compassion, justice and interdependence.

We covenant with one another to respect the inherent worth and dignity of every person…and we affirm our place in the Interdependent Web of all existence of which we are a part.

A long-time volunteer with a dog rescue, Christine Smith and her granddaughter Mia will share their experiences with dog rescue and will talk about what dog rescue has to do with that web, and why animal rescue, particularly dog rescue, is not just an act of kindness, but a moral, spiritual, and community practice.

Christine Smith is the sister of fellow UUCTS Member Pat Donohue. Christine is an active member of the UU Church of Tampa, where she shared this well-received message.

Inspired by research for a church history video, this reflection invites us to consider how understanding our roots can deepen our appreciation for those who came before us—and help guide our way forward as a covenantal community.

“Life Lessons from Puzzles”

Lay Leaders: Kathy Hopkins, Pam Hudson, Liz Moore
with artistic assistance from Starfire and Griffin

Life is a complex journey, much like a puzzle, where each experience and piece contributes to the overall picture of who we are.

They encourage reflection on our individual paths and the connections we make along the way.

Rather than a traditional sermon, the congregation will create the message together.

The service will begin as usual in the sanctuary, then adjourn to the Social Hall for a guided activity involving jigsaw puzzles and the creation of collective puzzle pieces.

"Love In the Drivers Seat"

What would our days be like if we started each day by affirming that “Love Is the Way”?

How can we be the hands of love during these tumultuous times?

Really, no act of kindness or love is too small.

I have found that when I put love in the Driver’s Seat of my life, my life works better.

Join Sue on August 9 as she explores some ways to start our days from a place of love.

Co-Founder of emPower Music & Arts, which hosts the yearly empower Music Festival and provides thousands of songs, sheet music, licensing and other resources to our ministries, Sue believes in the power of music to touch hearts and heal lives.

She has created and organized dozens of conferences and events that train music directors to be more effective leaders.

In addition to visiting hundreds of churches across the country as a speaker, musician, and workshop leader, Sue has been the Music Director at Unity Church of Clearwater for over thirty-five years and is part of their leadership team.

She also served as Assistant Music Director at Espiritu Catholic Church for 27 years where she became friends with Bonnie Whitehurst.

Sue served on Unity Worldwide Ministries Board of Trustees, and is currently on the Board of Directors for Summersongs, INC, a songwriting camp for adults.

A prolific singer-songwriter, Sue has created 8 CDs of original, award winning, uplifting positive music. She released her new CD “There Are Moments” in 2020.
