BonDurant, President of Roanoke Bible College in Elizabeth City, NC. He and StacyCox, a ministerial student at the college alternated in conducting services through November of 1958. The first service was held in the Jewish Synagogue on Main St, the first Lord's Day in December of 1956. The synagogue was rented for $30 per month and for two years we were allowed to apply the rent toward repairs of
the building. Our special thanks go to George W. BonDurant, students of Roanoke Bible College, and men of Rosemary Church of Christ for assisting in putting the synagogue in a suitable condition for use. Rosemary Church of Christ located just outside of Washington, NC played an important role in the establishment of the Church here in Tarboro by paying Brother Bondurant's salary while he ministered to the church. We had assistance from other churches also. Beulah Church of Christ located near Nashville, NC, loaned a piano until we were able to buy one. A local church sent chairs, tables and a few pews for our use. Our indebtedness for the growth of the Church extends to Bethany Church of Christ. A number of our members transferred their membership from Bethany since they were living in the Tarboro area. There were eighteen charter members; Graydon Anderson, Nerie Anderson, Janet Anderson (Crumpler), Mattie Barnes, Francis Carson, Margaret Carson, Janet Carson (Allsbrook), Lillie Causway, Sandra Causway, Glenn Causway, Dickie Causway, Bennie Jo Corbett (Smith), Meredith Fisher, Elizabeth Fisher, Jesse Pridgen, Virginia Pridgen, George Robbins and Lillian Robbins. At a congregational meeting in April 1958, a board consisting of four elders and three deacons was selected by a majority vote. In 1958, land located on Saint Andrew St was purchased on which a church building could be erected. In April 1963, it was decided to trade the first property purchased for more desirable land located on Daniel St. On Thanksgiving 1964, we moved into the new church building using the fellowship hall for worship area. We continued holding services there until October 1972. The need for an auditorium of the church building to be completed was seen more and more each day and the board began making plans and presenting ideas where by faith we could have the auditorium so much desired. The auditorium was completed and on October 15, 1972, services were held in the beautiful auditorium that was built by faith. On December 3, 1972 we dedicated the building and auditorium. On July 3, 1977 the congregation voted to acquire a house located at 216 Daniel St to be used as a church parsonage. In June of 1996, the church purchased an additional 3.56 acres of land bringing the total church acreage to 7.039. In May of 1997, stained glass windows were installed in the church sanctuary. In late summer of 2004, renovations were done to the church sanctuary, fellowship hall and vestibule. The stage was extended out 24 inches. New carpet, pews and pulpit furniture was placed in the sanctuary. New tile was installed in the vestibule and fellowship hall. A new sound cabinet was also put in the sanctuary. New outside doors were installed outside the vestibule and the Daniel St entrances as well as a canopy was added at each of these entrances.
