Cemetery Mapping Project! We're currently in the process of mapping the cemetery, including utilizing ground-penetrating-radar (GPR) to locate existing plots. The orange spray paint used to mark locations is temporary and will fade away. Thank for your understanding and support :)

Nestled behind an Allsups gas station and within earshot of the town's busiest thoroughfare, the graveyard may seem an incongruously humble resting place for many of the larger-than-life characters that dominate Taos history.

We found another grave at Sierra Vista Cemetery Association while cleaning. Does anyone know the history of Edna M. Kennon? 1908-1931.

The clean up was a great success, the Story Board is up and much abbreviated dedication took place thanks to a snow storm that blew through
here is what I had to say in case you missed it.
I have revered this cemetery for many years. As an artist how could I not. The pioneer founding artist
established this many years ago and most of them are buried here. Berninghaus, Higgins,Couse,Phillips,Dunton, more recently Gaspard, Kloss and many more.
People just like me. They left the familiar surrounding of their comfortable lives to experience one of the most beautiful places in the world, Taos.

I drove through here often to visit with my old departed friends.
I brought my future wife here on our second date in Taos to show her this treasure. She still agreed to marry me.
My serious launch into this adventure that I love so much and am so proud of , is the afternoon I met Tom Tarleton here to talk about pruning the Lilacs to get ready for the first Lilac Festival in Taos.

He was ill. He had spent many hours of his life trying to honor this wonderful place. He was tired and the responsibility was heavy on him. He asked a simple question. Thom will you help me. I can’t do it any more.
I said I will try.
And I have tried my best to honor all of the memories.
We have people from all walks of life and cultures who are laid to rest here and they deserve our very best effort to honor their memories.
I have had the most amazing partners in this adventure Anne and Barbara Brenner , Louis Codone, Patsy and Dennis Scott, Elizabeth, Criddenton Palacio Lavinia Wheeler.
Also many friends have donated money for the fifteen new trees planted and for general upkeep. Their names are too numerous to list today but they will be acknowledged on our story board.
The Town of Taos has been a great partner in this effort too. Last year the town helped with clean up and this year awarded a grant to help pay for the story board.
I want to thank Mayor Barrone, Rick Bellis, Lynda Perry, Steve Kennebeck and all the members of the Town Council for their help in making this happen
This is a hands on grass roots effort. We all seriously get down and dirty and work. We are so honored that you have come here today and are ready to work with us to preserve this treasure. Thank you
