Happy Losar!

February 18th is the first day of the Year of the Fire Horse on the Tibetan calendar. It’s the first of fifteen auspicious Days of Miracles, commemorating when Shakyamuni Buddha performed miracles to inspire the minds of sentient beings and turn beings' minds towards the Dharma.

Over these next merit-multiplying Fifteen Days of Miracles, the karmic potential is said to be increased by 100 million!

May you and all beings globally have a most blessed, happy, healthy, and virtuous Year of the Fire Horse.

Losar Tashi Delek!

Today is Chökhor Düchen day - the day we celebrate the Buddha's first turning of the Wheel of Dharma and teaching (which was on the Four Noble Truths).

Today, every act of virtue is multiplied millions of times, so it is a perfect day to offer prayers.

Happy Chökhor Düchen!

Geshe Sherab's teaching of the Rice Seedling Sutra Part 4 is now on YouTube. This text is a foundational Mahāyāna Buddhist text that explores dependent origination and is one of the most essential teachings in Buddhism. The teachings continue next week on Thursday, 7/3, over Zoom and in-person with Gesha-la. Our Zoom meeting link can be found on our website or on this Facebook profile listed under links.

Some key takeaways from Part 4 include:

Our perception of reality is affected when we understand how everything is interconnected.

Anger and attachment disturb the mind and lead to suffering, so it's important to make a conscious effort to reduce these feelings promote inner peace.

Realizing one's true potential for enlightenment and seeing the truth of existence leads to understanding the Dharma and realizing Buddha nature.

Geshe Sherab's teaching of the Rice Seedling Sutra Part 3 is now on YouTube. This text is a foundational Mahāyāna Buddhist text that explores dependent origination and is one of the most essential teachings in Buddhism. The teachings continue this week on Thursday, 6/26, over Zoom and in-person with Gesha-la. Our Zoom meeting link can be found on our website or on this Facebook profile listed under links.

Some key takeaways from Part 3 include:

The concept of dependent arising, its relationship to suffering, and the path to liberation through the Noble Eightfold Path.

True happiness and peace arise from overcoming mental defilements through spiritual practice.

All phenomena are interconnected and arise based on causes and conditions.

When ignorance ceases, so do all subsequent links, ending the cycle of rebirth and suffering.

When karma is manifesting, the best thing to do is to accept the fact and deal with it.

When karma is manifesting, the best thing to do is to accept the fact and deal with it.

So, we shouldn’t worry about the nuclear age because it’s already here. We’re human beings; we created this situation. We lit this fire a long time ago. Of course, the earth has contained nuclear energy since it began, but has taken human intelligence to make it as dangerous as it has become. In Buddhism, we call this karma. Once a situation has manifested, the best thing to do is to accept the fact and deal with it.

Geshe Sherab's teaching of the Rice Seedling Sutra Part 2 is now on YouTube. This text is a foundational Mahāyāna Buddhist text that explores dependent origination and is one of the most essential teachings in Buddhism. The teachings continue this week on Thursday, 6/19, over Zoom and in-person with Gesha-la. Our Zoom meeting link can be found on our website or on this Facebook profile listed under links.

Some key takeaways from Part 2 include:

The twelve links of Dependent Origination:

1. Ignorance → 2. Volitional formations (karma) →

3. Consciousness → 4. Name and form →

5. Six sense bases → 6. Contact →

7. Feeling → 8. Craving →

9. Grasping → 10. Becoming →

11. Birth → 12. Aging and death

Each step arises because of the one before it, leading to suffering - this cycle is self-created and liberation comes by understanding and breaking this cycle, especially by eliminating ignorance.

By understanding dependent arising, we develop renunciation of samsaric pleasures; motivation for liberation and awakening; and clarity that we are responsible for our own suffering and happiness.

Geshe Sherab kicks off his teachings starting with Part 1 of the Rice Seedling Sutra. This text is a foundational Mahāyāna Buddhist text that explores dependent origination and is one of the most essential teachings in Buddhism. The teachings continue today, Thursday, 6/12, over Zoom and in-person with Gesha-la. Our Zoom meeting link can be found on our website or on this Facebook profile listed under links.

Some key takeaways from Part 1 include:

The analogy of rice seedling is used to explain how all phenomena arise depending on causes and conditions. Just as a rice seedling grows dependent on soil, water, sunlight, and a seed; likewise, all phenomena—suffering, consciousness, liberation—arise due to causes and conditions.

The Buddha is "awakened" from two types of obscurations: Afflictive obscurations - emotions like anger, attachment, ignorance, and Cognitive obscurations - subtle imprints left by delusions that prevent omniscience, such as the appearance of inherent existence even when it’s no longer believed.

By deeply understanding dependent origination, one overcomes ignorance—the root of suffering.
