Most automobile owner’s manuals don’t tell you to turn the steering wheel to change direction, press the brake to stop, or roll down the window for fresh air. Some things about driving come naturally. But those same manuals can contain hundreds of pages explaining how to properly operate, maintain, and care for features that don’t come instinctively. Marriage is much the same. God, our Creator, has given us instruction in His Word because many aspects of a strong, joyful, and God-blessed marriage don’t come naturally. They must be learned and practiced. The good news is this: the Manufacturer has provided everything we need. When we follow His guidance, our marriages can run smoothly through both the highways and the backroads of life. In many fairy tales, after the characters endure trials and hardships, the story wraps up with a familiar line: “and they lived happily ever after.” It paints a picture of a perfect journey to the end—where happiness is guaranteed. When it comes to marriages, many couples step into their wedding day with that same expectation. They believe that from that moment forward, life together will simply fall into place—happily ever after. But the reality often looks different. The disappointment when couples realize that the saying may only be true in fairy tales can be devastating. Some give up. Either they walk away from the marriage, or the marriage walks away from them.
