What We Believe And Why It Matters

People often ask, “Pastor, if Christians are reading the same Bible, why are there so many different denominations?”
Why do we have Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Episcopalians, and so many others?

Sometimes those differences arose from sincere attempts to understand Scripture. Sometimes they came from historical circumstances, cultural divisions, political conflicts, or disagreements over church government. And sometimes, if we are honest, denominations divided because human pride got in the way.

But disagreement is not necessarily evidence that the Bible has failed. It is evidence that human beings can read the same words while bringing different traditions, assumptions, and experiences to the text. The Bible is perfect, but its readers are not.

Two people can stand in front of the same window and describe different parts of the landscape. One may notice the mountain while another notices the river. Both may see something real, but neither sees everything. That is why we need humility.

However, humility does not mean that truth is unknowable. It does not mean every interpretation is equally correct. It does not mean doctrine does not matter.

Some people say, “It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you are sincere.” But sincerity alone cannot save anybody. A person can sincerely take the wrong medication. A driver can sincerely travel in the wrong direction. You can sincerely believe that a bridge is safe, but if the bridge is broken, sincerity will not keep you from falling.

What we believe matters because truth matters.

As an Independent Baptist church, we do not claim that Baptists are the only people going to Heaven. We do not believe that the word Baptist saves anybody. There will be no denominational roll call at the gates of Heaven.

We are not saved because we are Baptist. We are Baptist because we believe Baptist doctrine most faithfully reflects biblical teaching concerning Scripture, salvation, baptism, communion, and the local church.

Our cry must never be, “Back to our denomination.” Our cry must be, “Back to the Bible!”

The Bible is still right!

There are many theological disagreements among Christians, but three repeatedly rise to the surface: What is the final authority for Christian belief? How is a person saved? What do baptism and the Lord’s Supper mean?

At the same time, mainstream Christian denominations share several foundational beliefs: Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior; God is revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; and Christians are commanded to love God and one another.

Therefore, we must know where we can fellowship, where we must disagree, and where we cannot compromise.

It's Easy to Know What You Would Do Before You Have to Do It

Church, there are some things that are easy to say when you are sitting comfortably in your seat. We look at somebody else's situation and say:
“I would never do that.”

“If that were me, I would have walked away.”

“If somebody treated me like that, I know what I would do.”

“If I were in their position, I would have spoken up.”

“If they threatened me, I wouldn't be afraid.”

“If God blessed me with that much money, I know I would tithe.”

“If I ever got that opportunity, I know I wouldn't compromise.”

“If I were Peter, I never would have denied Jesus.”

But there is something we often forget: It is one thing to imagine the moment. It is another thing to live the moment. There is a version of ourselves that exists in our imagination. That version is always brave. That version always says the right thing. That version always makes the right decision. That version never gets scared.

That version never gets tired. That version never gets angry. That version never gets tempted. That version never gets overwhelmed.

But then the moment comes. And sometimes the person who shows up in the moment is different from the person we imagined beforehand.

IT'S DIFFERENT WHEN THE MOMENT COMES.

Peter teaches us that lesson. Before the arrest, Peter knew exactly what he was going to do. Jesus said, “You're going to deny Me.” Peter essentially said, “Jesus, you don't know me like I know me!” Jesus said, “Peter, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” Peter said: “Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee.”

And I don't believe Peter was lying. I believe Peter meant every word. He loved Jesus. He believed he was loyal. He believed he was courageous. He believed that when the moment came, he would stand. But Peter was making a decision about a battle he had not fought yet.

Never confuse what you intend to do with what you have been tested enough to know you will do.

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”
The text doesn't say he isn't standing. It says while you're standing, don't become so confident in yourself that you forget you're capable of falling.

Hell, Judgment, And The Saving Victory of Jesus Christ

Hell is real, judgment is certain, the lake of fire is final, but through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, no one has to face either one. Jesus entered death, conquered the grave, and offers eternal life to every sinner who repents and believes, so the final fire need never be our destination.

There are some subjects the modern church would rather whisper about. We like heaven, but we avoid hell. We celebrate grace, but we become uncomfortable with judgment. We sing about the Lamb, but we forget that the Lamb is also the Judge. Yet a physician who sees a deadly disease and refuses to name it is not compassionate. A watchman who sees danger and will not sound the alarm is not kind. And a preacher who tells people how to live their best life but never tells them how to receive eternal life has left the most important truth unsaid.

Jesus spoke about judgment because Jesus loves people. The same Christ who said, “Come unto me,” warned about the danger of dying separated from God. The Bible does not reveal hell to satisfy our curiosity. It reveals hell to call us to repentance, to deepen our gratitude, and to send us into the world with the gospel.

This message is not about deciding which people we think belong in hell. That seat belongs to the Judge, and we are not Him. This message is about asking whether our names are written in the Lamb’s book of life and whether we care enough to tell somebody else that the door of salvation is still open.

Ezekiel 33:11 — Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

God does not delight in condemnation. God calls the sinner to turn and live. The warning is severe because the danger is real; the invitation is tender because the Savior is good.

The Wheat And The Tares

Jesus had a way of taking an ordinary scene and opening a window into eternity. He talked about fishermen and nets, shepherds and sheep, women baking bread, merchants buying pearls, and farmers planting seed. In this parable, He takes us into a field. At first glance, the field looks peaceful. A farmer has done everything right. He prepared the ground, selected good seed, and planted with expectation. But something happened in the darkness.

“While men slept,” an enemy entered the field. He did not tear down the fence. He did not burn the barn. He did not steal the crop. He did something more subtle: he planted counterfeit seed among the genuine seed, and then “went his way.” The sabotage was hidden. The damage would not become visible until later.

When the plants first came up, everything looked similar. The tare—commonly understood as darnel—resembled wheat during its early growth. Only as the plants matured and began to bear fruit did the difference become clear. The servants were shocked. “Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?” In other words: “Lord, if You are good, why is there evil in Your field? If You planted truth, where did this deception come from? If You gave us hope, why are we still surrounded by pain?”

That question is not limited to an ancient farm. We ask it in our families, churches, communities, and hearts. “Lord, I prayed over this child—where did this rebellion come from? Lord, we built this ministry on Your Word—where did this conflict come from? Lord, I tried to treat people right—where did this betrayal come from? Lord, I gave You my life—why am I still battling this temptation, this grief, this sickness, and this discouragement?”

Jesus does not deny the trouble. He says plainly, “An enemy hath done this.” Yet His instruction is surprising: do not tear through the field trying to uproot everything you believe is wrong. Keep growing. The owner has not lost control of the field, and the harvest is still coming.

Don’t uproot—keep growing; God will handle the harvest.

Back To The Basics

There is something comforting about tradition. Tradition connects us to people who came before us. Tradition gives rhythm to life. Tradition can preserve wisdom, identity, and testimony. Some traditions deserve to be honored because they remind us of what God has done.

But there is a danger whenever we forget the difference between a tradition and the truth. A tradition says, ‘This is how we have done it.’ The truth says, ‘Thus saith the Lord.’ A tradition may be useful for a season. The truth is settled forever. A tradition can point us toward God, but a tradition must never be allowed to take the place of God.

Psalm 119:89 — “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.”

We are living in a time when trust in institutions has declined. Many people—especially younger people—do not automatically trust a church because the word Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, or non-denominational is on the sign. They are asking different questions: Is Jesus really there? Is the Bible being taught in a way I can understand and live?

Will somebody know my name? Will somebody care about my family? Does this church make any difference in its neighborhood? Why don’t these so called Christians practice what they preach?

The answer is not to water down the Gospel. The answer is not to erase doctrine. The answer is not to entertain people into the Kingdom. The answer is to proclaim the same Gospel clearly, love people genuinely, serve our community visibly, and do ministry excellently—without pretending to be something we are not.

Hear me carefully: changing the music is not changing the message. Changing the schedule is not changing the Scripture. Using technology is not tampering with theology. Moving a ministry outside the building is not moving away from the Bible. Changing methods is not changing doctrine.

Doctrine is eternal; methods are seasonal!

Jesus Christ never compromised truth. He never apologized for righteousness. He never negotiated away the will of His Father. But Jesus repeatedly challenged religious customs that kept hurting people, excluding people, and hiding the heart of God. Our text gives us three truths that can bring the church back to the basics.

Yesterday in Sunday School we had our quarterly VBCT Sunday Morning Sermon Trivia. I’d like to congratulate our top 3 players. Winners received nice gift cards.
