In 1995, NBC had the chance to pick up The Wayans Bros but came back with one demand that crossed the line. Network executives told the brothers that John Witherspoon was too ghetto for their vision and needed to be recast. Instead of compromising their artistic integrity and abandoning the man who brought Pops to life, Keenen Ivory, Damon, and Shawn Wayans walked away from the deal entirely.
The WB network stepped in and gave the show a home without demanding changes to the cast. What followed was five seasons of pure comedy gold that helped define Black sitcom history alongside Martin and other classics. John Witherspoon became the heart of the show as the no-nonsense father figure who delivered some of the most quotable lines in television. His chemistry with the Wayans brothers felt authentic because it was built on mutual respect and genuine friendship.
This decision proved that standing firm on your values can literally change television history. The Wayans refused to let network bias dictate their creative vision and ended up creating something legendary. Fans still quote Pops daily and consider the show one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. There was never a proper finale because the show was that good and that important. When networks try to sanitize Black excellence, sometimes the best response is taking your talent somewhere that appreciates what you bring to the table.
