Scripture: Mark 9:30-37
Key verse: Mark 9:35 “Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.””

- God-given longing for greatness has become ugly and distorted by sin.
Jesus teaches us His way of greatness ““You must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

- No matter what position you have, you’re to serve first, live last in a “me first” world.

- “Servant of all” means not selective service, but to all – strangers, lowly, even to the very last and least significant people.

- Jesus gives an example of the last and the least, a little child.

Have you served a stranger or least significant people or needy people, not expecting any return?

- Helping one lost soul under your care is the best way to practice this.

Scripture: Mark 9:14-29
Key verse: Mark 9:19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

- The boy possessed by an evil spirit is a product of the unbelieving generation. But people are powerless to this boy.

- “Bring the boy to me” shows that Jesus the solution because of His power and authority over evil spirits and His unconditional love.

- How can we receive this power? Jesus says, “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

- Faith is the channel of Jesus’ power. Prayer is the expression of faith.

- How can we have faith? We need to confess our unbelief and build up a personal relationship with Jesus by listening and obeying the word of Jesus and prayer day by day.

Scripture: Mark 9:2-13
Key verse: Mark 9:7 “Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!””

- Transfiguration of Jesus – the true image and the final glory of Jesus

- The truth – must suffer, must be killed, then rise again: disciples
: hard to accept because of fear of suffering and death.

- Jesus showed His glorious image and God’s voice “Listen to Him” – by faith in the living hope

- We deserve eternal torment because of our sins. But in His mercy, Jesus suffered Hell for us – suffered God’s wrath for each and every one of our sins.

- It’s not YOLO, “You only live once.” No, it’s YOLF, “You only live forever”

- What’s your choice? Listen to him or listen to yourself. Invest in your dreams and this world that will shatter? Or invest in Jesus and His kingdom?

- What is your hope? Are you only looking down on this world? Or Are you looking up to Heaven?

- We are living in this fallen world. But we Christians live with the image of Jesus’ transfiguration and his second coming as shown in Raphael’s painting. When we do, we can willingly suffer and sacrifice for Jesus and His Kingdom.

Scripture: Mark 8:31-38
Key verse: Mark 8:34 “Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

- Back in the day, the cross was an ex*****on instrument.

- Jesus did not pray “Father forgive them” from the ground looking up at the cross. He prayed it on the cross, as He gave His life in sacrificial love.

- If I’m going to follow Him, it means that He is in charge.

- When his sacrificial love grips your soul, it frees your heart!

- The invitation of Jesus today. "Die to live" Losing ourselves is the way of gaining life and ultimate victory in Jesus.

Scripture: Mark 8:27-30
Key verse: Mark 8:29 ““But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”“

- Today, each of us is asked one big question of Jesus, which will determine our destiny.

- We are to answer the question with our life response rather than a verbal response.

- “Who do you say I am?” Let’s confess, “you are the Christ." “you are God’s anointed king and promised Messiah, my Savior, the Lord, and my king.”

- Personal confession leads to a personal relationship with Jesus as Christ, otherwise, we will not enter the kingdom of God.
Luke 17:23-27 Parable of the narrow door. “He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ 26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’”
Importance of personal relationship with Jesus as Christ.

Scripture: Mark 8:22-26
Key verse: Mark 8:25 “Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.”

- Two stage healing of a blindman: Brought by friends, family members. Personal holding hands and leading first, 1) Saliva and touching - Opening eyes; light – but not seeing clearly 2) Seeing clearly

- The blind man’s honest confession. He was healed by the repeated touch of Jesus.

- What’s your stage? Darkness to light? Seeing clearly? Or you don’t care and living in darkness or unclear vision

- Honest confession and asking Jesus’ touch

Scripture: Mark 7:31-37
Key verse: Mark 7:34 "“He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”).”

- Jesus's healing of a man with deaf and mute – Unique way of healing; touching the ears and tongue. Looking up the Heaven. Deep sigh. Communicating with this man with deaf and mute, using this man's language -- connecting with him with His empathy and deep understanding.

- Jesus, empathetic messiah. This is how we met Jesus and were touched by him.

- Personal touch with spiritually deaf and mute people; practicing Jesus' empathy and understanding on campus --> eventually His powerful word "Be open and liberate"

Scripture: Mark 7:24-30
Key verse: Mark 7:29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

- In this passage, Jesus not only had in mind the woman’s desperate need but also with teaching the disciples beyond healing.

- This passage also teaches us that Jesus gives us “what we need” rather than “what we want”.

- “Grace” is God’s favor to the unmerited, unearned, and undeserved.

- Let’s approach Jesus as undeserved sinners, asking His mercy and grace.

- Let’s bring our desperate need to Jesus by faith, and learn what we really need, and grow in His spiritual blessings.

Scripture: Mark 7:1-23
Key verse: Mark 7:15 “Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”

- The Pharisees and teachers of the law accused disciples of not keeping the tradition of washing hands --> Jesus saw their hypocrisy and evil intent.

- The commandment of God vs the sake of their men-made traditions.

- It is the defiled heart that breaks the relationship with God.

- We should weigh on inside purity and motive rather than on outside man-made rituals and traditions.

- Martin Luther's statement against the corrupted practice, 'indulgence': “My conscience is captive to the Word of God.”

- Cleansing inside - repentance by the word of God: becoming a man and woman of integrity.

Scripture: Mark 6:45-56
Key verse: Mark 6:50b “Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.””

- In our voyage of life, we will face storms of life one after another.

- In the course of our journey, we will be corrected and perfected by these storms of life.

- Let’s remember who Jesus is and what he has done for us in the past through the storms.

- Let’s anchor our faith in Jesus, the giver, and source of eternal life.

- God will not only sustain us with peace in the midst of the storms but also surely will carry us through the storms, safely to our final destination, His glorious kingdom.

Go and See

Scripture: Mark 6:30-44
Key verse: Mark 6:38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”

- Feeding 5,000 with five loaves and two fish.

- John’s gospel: Jesus “the bread of life” (John 6:22). Jesus wanted each miracle to be a revelation of Himself. Physical bread vs spiritual bread, the bread of life.

- People failed to get the spiritual message. They wanted the gift but not the Giver.

- However, the disciples learned the lesson and remembered it forever --> small contribution by faith produces a miracle.

- One meal lasts only 8-12 hours. Jesus’ miracle through small contribution from the disciples gives us everlasting truth.

- Jesus is asking us today. “How many loaves do you have? Go and See.”

Scripture: Mark 6:7-13
Key verse: v7 “Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.”

- We Christians are the light of the world, called to shine the light of Jesus to this dark world.

- We are called to be with Jesus and eventually be sent out to preach.

- Focus of ministry: preaching the message of repentance and Good News of salvation in Jesus.

- We should depend on Jesus’ power and authority.

- Jesus’ commandments always include His enablement: when we obey, we will experience His power and provision.

- Faith-driven relational engagement – 1:1 and shepherding
