Thoughts for the week

1) Reflect on the fact that Jesus asks his disciples the question, "Who do they say that the Son of Man is? "Why is it important to ask people what they know about Jesus? How can this be helpful in sharing what you know and believe about Jesus?

2) Peter tells Jesus that he is the "Christ, the Son of the living God." Notice that Jesus responds that God has revealed this to him. Reflect on the fact that any acknowledgment of Jesus in this way is through revelation. Why does this matter?

Thoughts for the week

1) Jesus does not respond to the woman, and when he does, he reaffirms his mission to the lost sheep of Israel. Why is it important that God continue forward with his plan to bless the world?

2) The woman shows a relentless trust in Jesus and his mercy. How does her trust in Jesus’ abundant mercy provide an important reminder for each of us?

Do You Need Mercy?

Matthew 15:21–28

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

[21] And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. [22] And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” [23] But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” [24] He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” [25] But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” [26] And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” [27] She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” [28] Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. (ESV)

Thoughts for the week

1) When Jesus comes near, he “immediately” says, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” Reflect on the way that Jesus interacts with people who should know and trust him.

2) Notice that Peter does not take Jesus at his word when he identifies himself. He says, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” How does Jesus treat Peter as he fails to trust him?

3) Notice that all of them worship Jesus as the Son of God. Reflect on the fact that struggling disciples with little faith still worship Jesus. How is this encouraging?

Who is the Son of God?

Matthew 14:22–33

Jesus Walks on the Water

[22] Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. [23] And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, [24] but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. [25] And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. [26] But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. [27] But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
[28] And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” [29] He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. [30] But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” [31] Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” [32] And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. [33] And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” (ESV)

Thoughts for the week

1) God gave his people provision as a gift in the wilderness during the Exodus. Reflect on the petition of the Lord’s Prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread.” How does this relate?

2) Reflect on the fact that John the Baptist was killed before this account. How does God provide even in moments when it seems like he is not providing? How does Jesus’ death and resurrection ultimately provide, no matter what happens in life?

What does it truly mean to win?

Through Jesus’ Parable of the Weeds, we will consider the difference between the temporary victories the world celebrates and the eternal victory Christ has already won for His people.
