No other name…by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:7-12 When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, “By what power, or
in what name, have you done this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,
“Rulers and elders of the people, 9 if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to
how this man has been made well, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel,
that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the
dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 He is the stone which
was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. 12 And there is
salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men
by which we must be saved.”
Outlines:
I- The name of Jesus was given among men
II- The name of Jesus has power to save man.
III- The name of Jesus is the ONLY that saves man.
I- The name of Jesus was “given” among men.
Given = provided
The name of Jesus was provided for sinful man because man isn’t able to save himself:
Rom 5:6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
under heaven
Eph 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
Col 2:13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
Isa 64:6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a
polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
The Hebrew word for “filthy” is iddah which is an appointed time, specially the monthly courses
of women (Gesenius’ Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon

filthy rags—literally, a "menstruous rag" (Le 15:33; 20:18; La 1:17).

Under heaven = all men
Among men not to men: the name was not given as a mean of salvation but as a person who lived among them as God’s agent of salvation.
C.K. Barrett, a critical and exegetical commentary on the acts of the apostles, T &T clar, Edinburgh, 1944, volume 1, page 232
II- The name of Jesus has power to save man.
Salvation: could be a reference to the healing that took place v 9 by what means this man has
been healed ( Greek σῴζω “sozo” saved)
Ibid, page 231
As Peter had already, at Acts 4:11, quite departed from the theme of the infirm man’s cure, and
passed over to the assertion of the Messianic character of Jesus.

The Bible tells us that is the name of Jesus we have:
Salvation
Matt.1:21 “you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins”;
Romans 10:13 whosoever calls upon the name of Jesus shall be saved.
Forgiveness:
Acts 10:43 “whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins through his name”
1 John 2:12 “your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake”
Justification:
1 Cor. 6:9-11 “9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?
Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [f]effeminate, nor
homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will
inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were
sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our
God.”
Life:
John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,
and that by believing you may have life in his name.
III- The name of Jesus is the ONLY name that saves man.
Note the crowd that Peter was talking to…
“And there is salvation in no one else”
“for there is no other name under heaven is given among men”
“by which we must be saved” If we are to be saved at all, it must be done in this way Ibid, 233
John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not
see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
