St Peter Claver Catholic Church Feastday: September 9th Battling through a history of racially-motivated opposition, the first church building was finally erected in 1915.

St Peter Claver Church, Tampa - named for a saint who opposed slavery and ministered to Black slaves can trace its beginnings back to 1893. First established by the Sisters of the Holy Names, the elementary school began classes on February 2, 1894 for sixteen African American students. The current school (located at 1401 Governor St) was built in 1929 and now stands as the oldest parochial school

within the state of Florida and the oldest African American school of any kind still serving students in Hillsborough County. The current church (located at 1203 North Nebraska Ave) was dedicated in 1969 and is home to parishioners who reside throughout the Tampa Bay area.
