Joseph of Egypt is mentioned in the Book of Mormon by the prophet Lehi, speaking to his own son of the same name. Lehi tells his son Joseph, “Great were the covenants of the Lord which he made unto Joseph” (2 Nephi 3:4).

Those same covenants or promises are available to us today. When we embrace the gospel and are baptized, we enter into a special covenant relationship with Heavenly Father and become heirs of the promises made to the house of Israel. Our patriarchal blessings affirm that we are rightful heirs to God’s promises. As we make and keep temple covenants, we deepen our relationship with Him.

Our souls should swell with gratitude as we consider God’s great plan of salvation, redemption, restoration, mercy, and happiness. Knowledge of His plan provides precious perspective, enriches our joys, and strengthens us to overcome our challenges and adversities.

Heavenly Father yearns for us to return home to Him. He invites and promises blessings, but He will never compel, coerce, or constrain our exercise of the moral agency He gave to us. We must act and choose to return to Him by following the example of His Beloved Son.

President Jeffrey R. Holland died on Dec. 27. His son, Elder Matthew S. Holland, said the full realization of the loss of his father broke him as he realized his father would no longer call, but he told a BYU devotional audience the key to finding comfort in his grief.
