You can know you should forgive someone and still feel your whole body tense when they walk into the room.

We cannot manufacture mercy by trying harder.

St. Augustine prayed, “Give what you command, and command what you will.” The grace to do what God asks of us must itself be given by God.

Mother Caroline climbed the bell tower today with parishioner Paul Brokaw, who has been instrumental in its restoration, and the view from the top is hard to beat: Bayshore and the bay in one direction, downtown Tampa in the other, and our city stretching out below.

When the tower was originally built, the cross was positioned facing the sea, a beacon to ships coming into Tampa Bay. Now, after its restoration, the cross once again faces the water as it did more than a century ago.

There is something fitting about that for St. John’s. We want this church to be a beacon in our city, not simply a beautiful landmark on the Tampa skyline, but a place from which the good news of Jesus Christ goes out into the community around us. Our mission is to make Christ known, worshipped, and adored in Tampa and beyond. From the top of the tower, you get a pretty good view of the mission field.

We are tremendously grateful to Paul and to all those whose generosity and care have made this restoration possible. And we’re grateful that the cross of Christ continues to stand over this corner of Tampa, pointing us toward the One we are here to proclaim. ⛪️🔔

What exactly makes a Mass “sung”? 🎶

At our new 11:15 a.m. Sung Rite I Mass, more of the liturgy itself is sung: the celebrant chants portions of the service, responses are sung, and words that might ordinarily be spoken are carried by music.

It is an old Anglican way of worshipping, and beginning September 20, you can experience it every Sunday morning at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tampa.

A rainy day at Convocation! ☔️

Yesterday, St. John’s clergy and some of our lay delegates gathered with Episcopalians from across our region as we prepare for the Diocese of Southwest Florida’s Annual Convention, now just five weeks away!

Convocation brings together clergy and lay representatives from parishes in our region to hear updates, prepare for the work of Convention, and take part in the shared life of our diocese.

We’re grateful for those who have said yes to representing St. John’s at Convention this year, and looking forward to gathering with the wider Church in October!

79 St. John’s folks at Baseball with the Bishop! ⚾️

We had an incredible crew representing St. John’s at Tropicana Field on Friday night for one of our favorite diocesan traditions. Parishioners of every generation joined Episcopalians from across Southwest Florida for baseball, fellowship, and a very good summer evening together.

Thanks to Bishop Scharf and the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida for getting us out to the ballgame. We’ll see you next year!

Why worship in words we would never use at the office?

Rite I is full of language that sounds just different enough from everyday speech to get our attention: “thee,” “thou,” “beseech,” “vouchsafe,” and prayers whose rhythms have been shaping Anglican worship for centuries.

That difference is at least part of the point.

At St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tampa, our new 11:15 a.m. Sung Rite I Mass brings that historic language together with the music and ceremonial of the Anglican tradition, creating space to step outside the ordinary and turn our attention toward God.

Beginning Sunday, September 20.

20 years of Simon Morley at St. John’s. 🎶🥂

Yesterday, we had the great joy of celebrating Simon and two decades of his extraordinary ministry as our Organist & Director of Music. We heard from former clergy, friends, and family, raised a glass in his honor, and gave thanks for the countless ways his musicianship, leadership, faithfulness, and deep love of the Anglican musical tradition have shaped the worship and life of St. John’s.

Twenty years is no small thing. Simon’s ministry is woven into the life of this parish: ordinary Sundays and great feasts, weddings and funerals, choirs and congregations, and more hymns, anthems, voluntaries, and rehearsals than we could ever count.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the celebration so special (and for keeping it a secret!!!), but most of all, thank you, Simon. St. John’s is immeasurably richer for these 20 years, and we are so very grateful for you. 🇬🇧🎶

Why is St. John’s bringing Sung Rite I to Sunday mornings in Tampa?

Our Rector shares why we’re adding the 11:15—a Sung Rite I Mass rooted in the Book of Common Prayer and the rich liturgical and musical tradition of Anglican worship.

Traditional language. Sacred music. Choir and organ. The Holy Eucharist. All in the heart of Hyde Park, Tampa.

The 11:15 a.m. begins September 20.

Long post. Worth it. Promise. 🫶

There’s a lot happening at Rally Day this year, so September 13 is a very good Sunday to be at St. John’s. 😎✨☀️

We’ll begin with our banner procession at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, representing the many ministries of St. John’s and celebrating all that God has done—and continues to do—through the life of this parish. If you’d like to be part of the procession, DM us and we’ll get you connected with the right people.

After Mass, we’ll head outside for a BIG parish cookout, complete with a water bounce house. Kids, wear your bathing suits. Everyone else, dress accordingly. It will still be September in Tampa. The Kitchen Krewe has asked for parishioners to bring a side or dessert to share! Drop it off in the Parish Hall before heading into church at 9:30 a.m. 🥗🍔

We’ll also unveil our new 2026 Ministry Booklet, with information about the many ways to worship, learn, serve, sing, gather, and get involved at St. John’s.

And this year, we’re making it easier to take the next step. You’ll see a special QR code throughout Rally Day and inside the Ministry Booklet. Scan it and tell us what you’re interested in. Maybe you’ve always thought about joining the choir. Maybe you want to better understand your spiritual gifts. Maybe you know you want to serve but have absolutely no idea where to begin. That’s fine!! This is designed to help us help you find your place. 🤝🤩

And finally: You asked, we delivered. We made a calendar!! A full parish calendar for the fall—services, feast days, classes, Wednesday nights, parish events, and all the other things worth putting on your calendar actually on a calendar. Revolutionary stuff. You’re going to want to get yours. ‼️
