Saint Gregory the Great was born around 540 into a noble Roman Christian family.
He became prefect of Rome while still a young man, proving a gifted administrator.
Despite his status, he sought a life of prayer, poverty, and humility.
He turned his family home into a monastery and became a monk.
In 579, Pope Pelagius II sent him to Constantinople as a papal ambassador.
After returning to Rome, Gregory was elected pope in 590 during a time of crisis.
Rome faced famine, flooding, plague, and the turmoil of invasions.
Gregory organized prayerful processions and pastoral care for the suffering.
He directed the Church’s resources toward feeding the poor and hungry.
He treated even impoverished nobles with dignity, sending food as a gift rather than alms.
Gregory also sent Augustine of Canterbury and monks to evangelize England.
He preached tirelessly and strengthened the Church’s worship and sacred music.
He called himself the “servant of the servants of God,” a title later popes retained.
His leadership joined practical service, deep faith, and compassion for those in need.
When he died in 604, he was remembered and honored as Saint Gregory the Great.

A beautiful example of faith built to last.
The Discalced Carmelite sisters of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, are building a monastery through traditional craftsmanship—using stone, timber framing, and time-honored methods designed to endure for generations. Their vision is not simply to create a building, but to establish a place of prayer, peace, and spiritual renewal for the wider community.
When completed, the monastery will welcome visitors for Mass, the sacraments, and prayer. As the sisters continue their mission of praying for priests and for the Church, may this project truly become a beacon of light and hope for all who visit.
