In this morning's class Teacher Brent raised the question concerning a hymn sung by the choir in the early service, the question being "which was written first, the melody which was Londonderry Air or the words to the hymn "He Looked Beyond My Faults". Teacher Brent moved on too quickly for me to google up the answer but indepth and interesting research conducted this afternoon indicates that Londonderry Air pre-dates the hymn and was used by Northern Ireland as an anthem in Commonweath Games even before the tune became popular with the lyrics of Danny Boy in the early 1900s. Londonderry Air serves as the melody for about dozen hymns, one of which is "He Looked Beyond My Fault" written by southern gospel singer-writer Dottie Rambo and performed by the First Baptist Church of Dallas TX as they have a YouTube of their performance and FBC TLH doesn't...yet.

Two days ago I posted a news artile about a legislative bill that would have public schools teach the Bible as an elective class. As anticipated not everyone agrees that teaching the worlds greatest literary work and the basis of our legal system is a good idea. Here is a letter to the editor from a member of the Freedom From Relgion (the Constitution actually says "freedom OF relgion"...there is a huge difference) organization in opposition to the bill.

Deceptive Bible class bill deserves to be killed

The primary sponsor of a House bill requiring all state-funded high schools in Florida to offer an elective class on the Bible is Rep. Kim Daniels, who once “thanked God” her ancestors were enslaved because that allowed them to find Jesus.

At a committee hearing, Rep. Geraldine Thompson asked: “[Line 32 of the bill] says that there will be religious neutrality and accommodating the diversity of all students in the school. Does that mean that we’re saying we’re going to teach Islam? Are we teaching Buddhism? Are we teaching Hinduism? Because there’s a lot of diversity in Florida. And if there’s neutrality, are we teaching all of those different religions?”

Daniels replied, “No, that’s not what that means.”

Close to 40 percent of Americans born after 1987 identify as nonreligious. Diversity should also encompass nonbelievers. So a high school course on comparative religion could be useful, providing it also surveys writings by atheist and agnostic luminaries.

But comparative religion is not this bill’s intent. Lawmakers should kill HB 195 — a bill that aims to give public schools a mandate rife for abuse and divisiveness.

Bill requiring school elective Bible course OK’d in House

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Legislation that would require all Florida public high schools to offer elective courses on the study of the Bible won approval Thursday in a House committee but still faces many hurdles and constitutional questions before it could become law.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Rep. Kimberly Daniels of Jacksonville cleared a House Education panel Thursday on an 11-3 vote.

Daniels said the intent was not to teach a specific religion in school but rather to emphasize the Bible’s role in history, culture and the founding of the U.S. government.

“No student would be forced to take any of these courses,” Daniels said. “It doesn’t teach Christianity. It teaches from the Bible on history and culture. It’s a foundation of this country.”

There are actually three courses that could be offered in grades 9 through 12: the Hebrew scriptures and Bible’s Old Testament; the Bible’s New Testament; and a combination of all three. The curriculum would have to be neutral as far as the religious aspects and could not harbor any hostility toward other religions or holy books.

Anthony Verdugo of the Christian Family Coalition said the courses would not be “devotional” in nature but focused on an objective, academic look at the Bible.

“We cannot deny the impact of the Bible on world history and humankind. This is about academics. This is about expanding one’s worldview,” Verdugo said.

Opponents raised concerns that such Bible classes might be subject to lawsuits over the Constitution’s separation of church and state. Others said the course should also teach holy texts from other religions, such as Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.

“Religious neutrality with just one book. That just doesn’t connect to me,” said Democratic Rep. Anna Eskamani. “There’s a reason why we have separation of church and state in this country.”

In addition to the constitutional issues, the bill’s future is uncertain in part because there is no companion measure filed in the Senate. Some lawmakers are concerned about exposing Florida school districts to potentially costly lawsuits without providing them with any money or financial protection.

Daniels said 10 other states currently offer similar Bible courses in public schools and six additional states have such measures under consideration. None have been struck down by courts, she said.

“This is a public policy issue, not a worship issue. Religion will not be pushed down their throat,” Daniels said.

Ok, this may require a little heavy lifting in the thinking department but Empty Nesters are generally into the Bible and may find it an interesting read.

Nope, these guys won't be singing at the 9:00 AM service tomorrow...but our own FBC quartet will be. Plus, Josh will bring the message, after which Teacher Brent will draw distiction between the Bible, the inspired Word of God written by 40 men over a period od 2000 years and the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection written by Charles Darwin in 1859. Gonna be a great Sunday!

If you are reading the One Year Bible this morning you would have read Mark 4:35-39 which is a re-counting of a boat trip accross a lake during which a terrible storm erupts and threatens to sink the boat with all hands...until Jesus gets involved, which is the point of the story and best captured in music by the Chuck Wagon Gang in "Master, The Tempest Is Raging".
