As summer winds down and we look forward to the return of the cooler fall weather, enjoy a delicious kosher sandwich and knish, and some rugelach. Order your pastrami or corned beef sandwich now for pickup on Sunday, 30 August (no sales on pickup day). Each sandwich comes on rye bread, with a potato knish, homemade coleslaw, and a pickle on the side. Each sandwich order is just $18.00.

The rugelach we make is available in chocolate, cinnamon, and raspberry flavors, or a mix of all three. Each flavor is $15.00 for a pound or $8.00 for a half pound. (Rugelach are in the dairy category of kosher food and will be packaged separately from the sandwich, if both are ordered.)

Virginia blueflag irises hang on in the drought. We’re trying to sustain herbaceous plants we want to keep, and citrus tree saplings, with weekly hand-watering. Sometimes we miss a week, or miss a plant. Plants can’t move or cry out for water, we have to keep an eye out.

Shake off the winter blues and enjoy a hot and delicious sandwich and knish. We will be kicking off 2026 with our first sandwich sale of the year. On 22 February, Congregation Shomrei Torah will fulfill pre-sale orders of kosher pastrami and corned beef sandwiches on rye bread, each sandwich with a potato knish, coleslaw and a pickle.

No more freezer meltdowns? Shul kitchen security began taping the doors shut when kitchen is not in use, and installed a freezer door alarm. If a freezer door is left open, even slightly ajar, for 30 seconds, the alarm will begin emitting a beep every 10 seconds. After another minute with no response it will begin with its short little (but repeated and progressively longer) “noytfall” (emergency) siren audios. The effects continue to escalate, so that even kitchen workers engaged in intense conversation will hearken as it approaches Jurassic Park code red stage. What it will not do is shut the door; human intervention is still required.
