It is with deep sorrow that the Josephites announce the passing of Most Reverend John H. Ricard, SSJ, Superior General of the Josephites and Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, who died on May 20, 2026, at Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Washington, DC.

Born on February 29, 1940, Bishop Ricard faithfully served the Catholic Church for decades through his ministry as a Josephite priest, counselor, educator, pastor, bishop, humanitarian, and leader. He devoted his life to
the proclamation of the Gospel, humanitarian efforts worldwide, the mission of the Josephite Society, and the pastoral care of God’s people, especially within Black Catholic communities.

The Josephite community asks for prayers for the repose of Bishop Ricard’s soul, for the Josephite community, his family, friends, and all who
mourn his passing.

Fr. Hugon Council 3521 will be leading a rosary on Saturday, May 30 at 4:30pm at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, prior to the 5pm Vigil Mass. All parishioners are invite to attend.

Praying the rosary on the Vigil before each "5th Sunday" is a ministry of the brothers of your local Knights of Columbus council.

In preparation for our council’s 75th anniversary, brothers from Fr Hugon Council 3521 and the regional Chapter of Knights on Bikes continued the cleanup of our namesake’s gravesite. For the second straight weekend brothers from the council removed lichen from the wrought iron, trimmed the shrubbery, and cleaned the underbrush around the plot where Fr Joseph Hugon is buried.

In preparation for our council’s 75th anniversary, Knights of Columbus from Fr. Hugon Council 3521 continued the clean up of our name sake’s burial site. Over the past two weekends brothers from the council as well as the regional chapter of Knights on Bikes removed lichen buildup on the wrought iron fence, trimmed the overgrown shrubbery, and cleaned out the underbrush. It was a morning of fun and fellowship.

Fr. Joseph Hugon was the 1st permanent priest in Tallahassee, serving from 1877-1912.

Today, Fr. Hugon Council 3521 celebrates 74 years of service to the parishes of the Big Bend.
