After all these decades following the Holocaust, after “Never Again” became the moral promise of the civilized world, are we really heading back toward this kind of discrimination?

In 1290, King Edward I of England signed the Edict of Expulsion, ordering every Jewish person in the country to leave or face death. 🕍
It was the first national expulsion of Jews in medieval Europe, and it worked. England remained almost entirely without a Jewish community for over 350 years, until Oliver Cromwell quietly allowed Jews to return in 1656.
The Jews expelled that day had lived in England for over 200 years. They were merchants, physicians, scholars, and neighbors. They were given until November 1 to leave, and they were forbidden from taking most of their property with them. Some were robbed and drowned at sea by the very ship captains paid to transport them.
This was not an isolated act of cruelty. It was the culmination of decades of forced conversions, blood libel accusations, heavy taxation, and legal dehumanization. Edward I didn't invent antisemitism in England. He simply made it official policy.
What happened in England in 1290 would be repeated in France, Spain, Portugal, and across Europe over the next two centuries. The pattern was always the same.
