As we head into Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year this week, you may notice something different on the dinner table.

On Rosh Hashanah, many Jewish families replace the familiar braided challah with a round one. The round challah has no beginning and no end. It represents the cycle of the year, but also something much bigger: continuity.

No obvious beginning. No obvious end - One part flows into the next.

The round challah isn’t just about a new year. It’s a symbol of an unbroken story.

The Jewish story began thousands of years ago in the Land of Israel, with Jerusalem and Judea at its heart.

Then their enemies scattered them.

The Babylonians conquered Jerusalem and exiled many Jews. Centuries later, after Roman conquest, destruction, and revolt, Jewish communities became increasingly dispersed throughout the Mediterranean and beyond.

Over time, Jews built lives across North Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and eventually the Americas.

Different countries. Different languages. Different clothes. Different foods. But something remarkable happened- they carried Judaism with them.

The prayers traveled.

The Torah traveled.

Shabbat traveled.

The holidays traveled.

Parents taught children, who taught their children, who taught theirs.

Empires rose and fell.

Borders moved.

Languages disappeared.

Jewish communities were expelled, persecuted, and forced to begin again. And still, the traditions continued.

Perhaps that's why the circle feels like such a powerful symbol of the Jewish story.

A people could be scattered across the world and remain connected—to one another, to their traditions and to the generations who came before them.

Thousands of years later, Jewish families are still gathering.

Still telling the stories.

Still saying the prayers.

Still teaching their children.

The countries changed.

The languages changed. But the circle never stopped.
