Have you ever been at a point in your life where you felt everything was going perfectly? I don’t know anyone who can answer yes to this question. There may be some, but I do not know them. I don’t mean happy moments like buying your first home, marriage, or having a baby. It is always gratifying to receive something we have been waiting for. But as soon as we get it, here comes the worrying process of maintaining and keeping it. Happiness is finding contentment in who you are and where you are in life, not what you have. I won’t say that I have obtained this level of contentment, but the process cannot start until we stop focusing on what we want and appreciate all the Goodness God has blessed us with. We all go through it. I don’t believe any of us are exempt from something thrown at us to tear us down. Yet, Sunday after Sunday, I see people persist through whatever they are dealing with and make it to the house of God. We see their flaws but we don’t notice their persistence to continue moving forward in God. We see their smiles, but we do not know the pain that is behind that smile. I have even been accused of being fake because what should have torn me down only made me stronger. I find strength in the presence of God. It brings me great joy to see a person press their way to God despite their troubles. The lady in my church who brings her pillow to sit on every Sunday to support her aching back, the man who comes in on his cane, and the mothers who consistently push their way through on their walkers all bring me a great level of joy. Once we know God loves us and wants to take care of us, we can give all to Him. Continue to move forward and be the examples this world needs to see.

I still remember that enlightened feeling from over 20 years ago when I first realized God is real. All that talking and instruction from my mother had some merit to it. With this realization, came an insatiable hunger to know more about God. I began to read the Bible. I read it cover to cover, and when I finished, I started over again. I didn’t understand much of what I was reading, but I kept reading. I went to church listening to every word the preacher and teachers said. I could not understand how they had such in-depth information and understanding that I did not get from reading. I was reading from the same book, I thought. Then I learned about the commentaries they were using. Oh, a new level of excitement. You see, from this, I realized, I did not have to know all that they knew, but I did know how to find the information. This gave me confidence. This confidence began to flow over to other areas of my life. The greatest boost to my confidence was when God showed me that He did not expect me to speak or teach like anyone else. As long as I could study and present what He had given me, I was doing what He called me to do. I am not the smartest or most eloquent speaker, but no one else can deliver what God gave me better than I can, because God gave it just to me. Most of our insecurities come from comparing ourselves to others. Once we connect to God and realize He created us special and unique, our confidence goes through the roof. No one can be a better you than you.

God will not instruct us to do anything that He is not going to empower us to be able to do. We are weak; we are flawed; He is not. We put so many limitations on our flesh and abilities that we doubt the capabilities of our God. We cannot through our power, this is why He instructs us to rely on His. How do we rely on God? We start by believing He can. How can God give us something we do not believe in? We must believe it in order to receive it. So, when we read scriptures like Matthew 5:48, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect,” we automatically say, “No one is perfect.” I have made this statement several times myself, but I have never read this in the Bible, have you? As a matter of fact, there are several people in the Bible that God calls perfect. Google it. The Bible teaches that all are sinners, so what does it mean to ‘be perfect’? What is the difference between sin and perfection? This short inspiration is not designed to go into detail, but I will give you an overview. God is a spirit, and He is concerned about the spirit of His people. Do a study on perfection in the Bible and you will see each instance is surrounded with works of the spirit. When we say “no one is perfect,” we are referencing the fleshly side of man. Perfection is not possible in the flesh. But is it possible in the Spirit? The spirit is given and developed by God. So can God perfect His spirit that He places inside of us? It cannot be if we do not believe He can. We have to believe in Him in order for us to allow Him to work on us. Something to meditate on, isn’t it? So instead of saying there is something I cannot do, I ask God, how do I become what He is instructing me to become? I am not there yet, but I will not limit God when He tells me I can do all things through Him. I believe, Do you?

I was at a convention recently, and one of the managers on the panel of speakers was asked the question, “How do members get the support they need from management?” His reply was, “You simply ask. If you don’t ask, the answer is always, no.” He had a great point. We often expect people to know what we want and need, yet we do not communicate what it is we need to them. We know God knows everything, and He wants to give us the desires of our hearts. Yet, He still desires for us to communicate with Him. He wants us to ask our Heavenly Father, who owns everything, for all that we need. Our problem is not that we are not asking. Our problem is we are asking for selfish gain. Is this wrong? No. But most of the time, what we are asking for interferes with what God is trying to do in our lives. In order to receive what we want from God, we should pray to align our lives and desires with God’s will. We’re praying for a certain car when God is saying that car will distract us from what He needs us to be focused on. We’re praying for a certain beautiful home when God says that it is not the neighborhood He needs us to work in. We’re praying for this man and that woman when God is saying, I’m preparing you for my servant I’m developing on the other side of town. It is easy for us to get caught up in all the things this life has to offer. But let our greatest ask be, “Not my will, but Your will be done.” Then watch and see how God can really bless us.
