Jesus’ public ministry comes to a close in today’s passage. In it, we see the hardness of the human heart as well as the weakness of Christian conviction. More importantly, we see the graciousness of Jesus’ heart (He did not come to judge the world but save it.) and hear His unyielding conviction that what He says and does, which lead to eternal life, are just as the
Father says and commands.

Unless. There are a number of ‘unless’ statements in John’s Gospel. Typically, this word is found on the lips of Jesus, as is the case today. With divine clarity, He states, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” What is true in agriculture terms is also true in terms of salvation. Unless Jesus is lifted up, no one can be drawn to Him. But if He is lifted up, He draws all people to Himself, including you and me. Thanks be to God!

In the prologue of his Gospel, John provides a preview of the spiritual battle that will unfold as the Word becomes flesh. Jesus, the Light, shines in the darkness. Those in darkness hate Him and strive to extinguish the LIGHT, but their efforts are futile. The assurance given (and made manifest on Easter morning) is: the darkness did not (and cannot) overcome Jesus, the Light of the world. Thanks be to God!

Several times thus far in our Journey through John’s Gospel I have quoted from 1st Corinthians chapter 13. A life of faith is marked by “seeing dimly” and “knowing in part.” But what we see and know is enough to sustain us until the GREAT DAY when faith gives way to sight and we “know even as we are fully known.” Today’s passage provides us with glorious glimpses of Jesus, the Word made flesh. In Him, we see the heart and power of God. What a sight to behold!!
