Given a Task

1 Timothy 3:8-12

The apostles met with the whole church to deal with a situation that was threatening the continued growth of the church. They instructed those present to seek out among themselves men whom they could give the task of dealing with the threat. The congregation chose seven men. The apostles laid their hands on them and gave them the task. When you are given something it is a gift. We rarely view tasks as gifts, rather we we see them as burdens. They are actually both. The greatest opportunities in life bring burdens because they involve serving people. Remember, the burden of the cross Jesus gladly bore.

Can God be happy? We know he can experience joy, but we also know that joy and happiness are not the same thing. Joy is a state of mind while happiness is an emotion, usually felt based upon circumstances. It is not difficult to imagine God's anger, but can you imagine him laughing or being playful? Why have the angry and stern presentations of God been the most preeminent? Why has little historical attention been given to God's happiness? Can you imagine him happy? Can you imagine him being happy with you?

The Fellowship Orbit

Acts 4:32-37

We all need connections, but we desire them in different ways and to different extents. When we are added to the church, we are added to a fellowship. As the term "fellow" suggests, we are part of a group of peers, by the same calling, for the same purpose. While fellowship can included friendships, they are not the same notion. They are two different types of relationship that can overlap, but do not necessarily have to do so. When friends fall out they unfriend one another. When disciples fall out, they must reconcile to maintain fellowship. What separates the two notions is the reason for their existence in the first place.

The Passing

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:1-4

When elected president, James Garfield stated "I resign the highest office in the land (elder in the church) to become President of the United States." We would never consider the appointment of elders as a coronation or an inauguration, but it caries a similar significance. When elders lay their hands on a man who is becoming an elder, they are passing an honor and a responsibility that has been passed down since the Apostles themselves. To a great extent the viability and continuation of the presence of the church in this place results from following the lead of the Holy Spirit, who is the one who develops elders. This should be a time of prayer, seeking God's providence and wisdom as the eldership continues to change and grow.

It is a puzzle. Jesus hesitated while Lazarus was sick so that he would die. He told his disciples that "This sickness will not end in death." He did not go to Mary's and Martha's home, but sent to them to meet him while he was outside of the city. Ironically, Jesus did not cry because of the death of Lazarus, because Lazarus had only been "asleep" for 4 days. Onlookers saw the tears of Jesus and stated, "see how he loved him." They perceived that Jesus was mourning his loss of a friend, as they were. But there was no loss to mourn. Lazarus would be alive in mere minutes. As usual, when trying to understand the perspective of Jesus, we must see that his context for evaluating things was so much different from, and deeper than, ours. This was Jesus dealing with his enemy . . . death, and what death had wrought on all humanity.

It is a puzzle. Jesus hesitated while Lazarus was sick so that he w...

Discipleb

Matthew 10:24-26

What is the definition of a disciple? Is a church-goer the same as a disciple? Is someone who believes in God a disciple? What are the requirements of discipleship? To ask it in a somewhat crass way, what is the bottom line or the minimal daily requirement of discipleship? It is clear that there are disciples and that there are folks who are not disciples, but what about the "gray areas," folks who are disciple-like or who are partial disciples? If church-goer and disciple are not the same thing, then some church-goers may be in a for a huge surprise one day. Does baptism make one a disciple and is it a lifetime membership? Does God view you and me as disciples? How can we know?

1 John 3:13-16

The church at Corinth was pretty broken. The greatest majority of both letters to them was remedial, Paul's attempt to straighten our many serious issues: division, immorality, idolatry, perversion of worship, and many others. In the middle of his dressing down, Paul presented a solution for all their problems by taking them back to the drawing board. When all is said and done, when everything changes or passes away, three things remain: faith, hope, and love. The greatest of these is love.

Scripture does not instruct us concerning how to anoint elders and deacons, but it does give us examples of the process to follow. There are actually two different processes involved. First we must establish the correct mindset. If, when asked who actually leads the church, we answer with any of the following: elders, deacons, or ministers, it is good to be reminded that Jesus taught us not to call anyone leader, because there is only one leader (Matt. 23:10). If we refer to men as leaders or leadership long enough we will begin to perceive them that way, which will lead to their, and our, downfall. Maybe titles and terms aren't the only things we need to reconsider as we investigate the addition of more elders and deacons.

Scripture does not instruct us concerning how to anoint elders and ...
