Sermon Theme: I Am My Brother's Keeper.

When danger strikes, most people instinctively move away from it. Fire, violence, accidents, and disasters trigger a natural desire to find protection and safety. Yet first responders do the opposite. Firefighters, police officers, and paramedics run toward the very scenes others are fleeing. They enter burning buildings, approach violent situations, and kneel beside the injured in chaotic moments. This response is unexpected because it goes against basic human instinct.

Today God calls us to be spiritual first responders when we see people in trouble because of sin. Instead of self-preservation and comfort, we choose service to them and to our Lord. Our motive is the grace of God and his desire for the salvation of all mankind.

Sermon Theme for August 30: Cross Before Crown.

Some churches teach that if a person follows God, God responds by granting prosperity and peace, as would only be expected. Today we see how that is nonsense. The Bible explains that if we are part of the Church of God, we will have to bear crosses. Believers suffer in this world, sometimes just because they are believers.
Why bother? We carry our crosses in gratitude for Jesus carrying his cross, one too heavy for us because it was weighted down with our sin. We carry our crosses because we know that in those moments of struggle, we are forced to turn to Christ and rely on his strength. This is the unexpected path, the one Jesus himself walked: the cross comes before the crown.

Sermon Series: Unexpected Truths

The Declaration of Independence boldly asserts that certain truths are self-evident, accessible to human reason, and widely recognized. These truths include the equality of all people and unalienable rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The founders appealed to principles they believed reasonable people could recognize by reflecting on human nature and justice.

However, Lutherans note that the most important truths in the Bible are not self-evident. They are often surprising or contrary to human expectations. Scripture teaches that humanity is sinful, salvation comes by God’s grace, and God brings forgiveness and eternal life through Jesus Christ’s suffering and death. Biblical truth is revealed by God, not discovered by reason alone. While some truths may seem obvious, the Bible’s truths are often unexpected.

This summer, we’ll walk through the life of David—a shepherd, warrior, king, and sinner—whose story is filled with both great faith and real failure. What made David unique was not his perfection, but how God shaped his heart through every season of life. Again and again, we’ll see God at work: choosing the unlikely, fighting for his people, calling them to trust him, and offering grace in their lowest moments. Most importantly, David’s life points beyond itself to Jesus, the true King, who fulfills every promise. As we follow David’s journey, we’ll see that God is shaping our hearts too, forming in us a deeper trust, repentance, and joy in his grace.
