Join us for The History of Jazz, Tuesday February 10 at 7 p.m. 901 N J Street.

This series will cover the strong Black-American roots of Jazz and how Jazz has been affected by racism. The technical aspects of Jazz will also be discussed. In the music world, Jazz is referred to as “American Classical Music.” What Ludwig van Beethoven is to Europe, “Duke” Ellington is to America.

Please join us Saturday November 22 at 4:30 for a screening of this extraordinary and important film, “All People Free.”

This event is FREE and includes a Q&A + refreshments following the screening.

You are warmly invited to attend: Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 901 N J Street.

The documentary’s primary goal is to expose the urgent crisis of modern-day slavery and child abuse, affecting an estimated 20 million people trapped in brick kilns across North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. These families, forced into cycles of abuse and servitude at the lowest strata of the caste system, endure unimaginable hardship. Their lives sharply contrast with the demands of international consumer markets and the opulent architectural marvels their labor helps create—a cruel paradox of beauty built on suffering that lies at the heart of the story.

Hospitality provided with beer, wine, NA beverages, and small plate snacks.

Program:

-Introduction
-50-minute screening of the documentary
-Q&A with Ben Nichols (Founder) and Ruth Conlon (Director of Communications).

Enter through the parking lot or Ninth Street entrance.

Their music is an electrifying mix of deep Brazilian roots flavored with world rhythms—a blending of funk, jazz and soul with the classic sounds of samba and bossa nova. The band is based in Seattle, and Adriana hails from Porto Allegre, Brazil.

Join us Wednesday November 12 at 5:30 p.m. for a talk by Dr. Craig Johnson about his book, “How to Talk to Your Son About Fascism.”

Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 901 N J Street, Tacoma, WA

This talk will help you understand how the far-right recruits young people online, specifically young men, into hateful thinking and action. Dr. Johnson will also discuss what you can do about it.

Craig Johnson is a PhD from UC Berkeley, and has spent the last ten years studying the right-wing globally. He says the key to stopping right-wing hate is a secret weapon they’re unprepared for: empathy and understanding.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
“How to Talk to Your Son about Fascism” is a practical guide for parents, caregivers, and others with young men in their lives about how to talk with them about fascism and the right-wing, which specifically and particularly preys on them for recruitment.

Its central goal is to present research, history, and analysis about how and why the right-wing recruits young men to parents, educators, and anyone with a young person in their lives. The book covers the history of right-wing recruitment of young men, explaining why the right-wing focuses on recruiting men both on a theoretical basis and through the logic of movement-building, and then moves to practical analysis and suggestions for how to counter recruitment today. Recommendations come from excerpts and existing scholarship. Readers will finish the book with a better understanding of what fascism is and how it works, how it preys on young men, how it recruits and appeals to them, and how to stop this from happening.

This book will be of interest to anti-fascist researchers and activists, as well as parents and the general reader concerned about the rise of the extreme right.

The Walter Lowrie Speaker Series at IPC Presents: An Evening with Father James Alison.

6:30 - 8:30 pm, Friday, October 17
Father James Alison will talk about his new book “You Can If You Want To” followed by a Q&A. After, you are invited to join us downstairs for beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages (donations appreciated).

About the Book: What if Christianity was far more liberating than the culture wars suggest? Can the conflict concerning Christianity and homosexuality be viewed from a more interpretative lens? James Alison, a Catholic priest who is also a gay man, has been wrestling with the matter for over forty years.
This luminous and rigorous book dismantles the fear-based binaries which have dominated conversations in the Church. Striving to address potential concerns about accepting LGBTQ+ individuals within the church, James draws on scripture, tradition and his lived experience to form a broader understanding of faith and humanity.

Are you a person who loves history, architecture and art? We are a church founded in 1888 in the North End of Tacoma. The congregation in 1909 built a unique and beautiful worship space. In that space are many stained glass windows that in themselves very unique and beautiful works of art. We have had an assessment done on the condition of these windows and have found we are in a precarious situation in how much damage has occurred. If you are interested in finding out more about our windows and/or have ideas on where and who to contact to get funding for this project please stop by and join us on February 16.
