Sunday Church Gatherings at 4pm.
Over 30% of Jesus’ teachings are in the form of short fictional stories called parables. This Sunday we will begin a series being shaped by the parables of Jesus, called Kingdom Imagination.
The parables can easily be confused with little fables that provide helpful moral lessons for life. All good teachers use stories after all. The Hare and the Tortoise teaches us to go at a slow and steady pace, The Boy Who Cried Wolf teaches us to tell the truth, and The Parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us to be kind to people that are not like us… right?
Jesus teaches parables for a much greater purpose than that. The parables are Jesus’ commentary on the Kingdom of God that he’s ushering in. As N.T. Wright put it,
“The parables are told as kingdom explanations for Jesus’s kingdom actions. The parables are telling us: ‘Don’t be surprised, but this is what it looks like when God’s in charge.’”
Jesus is developing a kingdom imagination in his followers (and confusing those who are opposed to him). Jesus still uses his parables to form kingdom imagination in his people today. To those with “ears to hear” he says, “The Kingdom of God is like…”
