A note from LOL Music Director Rick Krause:

Each year, approximately 2 million people visit Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and other places that mark the beginning of our nation. Leaders of countries--as well as common citizens--come to witness first-hand the foundations of our democracy. For some, it is not just a trip, but a sacred pilgrimage.

The practice of going on a pilgrimage is imbedded in religious tradition. Jews make their way to Jerusalem and pray at the Western Wall. Muslims journey to Mecca at least once in their lives. Christians travel to Bethlehem and Jerusalem, while Martin Luther and other Christians venture to Rome. At Lord of Life, we have a meditation walk, which has 14 Stations of the Cross. Each station allows the faithful to pause and reflect on the life of Jesus Christ.

This weekend's Gospel ( June 6/7, 2026 ) tells of 2 people who went on a pilgrimage to see Jesus. First, it tells of a father whose daughter has died. He came believing that if Jesus placed his hand on her then she would live. Next, a woman who had a medical condition for 12 years came to see him. She came believing that if she touched Jesus' cloak she would be made well.

Going on a religious pilgrimage can be a profound experience. It can offer an opportunity for spiritual growth, healing, and help connect people with others.

Have you ever wanted to journey to a place and considered it a pilgrimage? If so, what impact did it have on you?

A note from LOL Music Director Rick Krause:

Around us each day, we experience a rhythm in life. In January, new calendars are hung and resolutions are made. Next, we huddle through the cold winter months and look forward to lengthening days and color returning. As spring breaks forth in nature, we make plans to venture outdoors again for more activities. When the dog days of summer approach, we look forward to weekend or vacation trips to the beach or mountains. In autumn, we wonder at the fall colors and anticipate gathering for family feasts. For all these things, we give thanks to God.

In our church year, there is a similar rhythm and progression. Beginning with Advent, we travel through the seasons of Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. Each church season has a different focus, color, and feeling, as we nurture and grow our faith in different ways.

This upcoming weekend, May 30/31, 2026, we will look at the seasons of the church year through the various hymns and songs of the church. As we gather for worship, we are invited to enter the presence of the living Lord. Through word and symbol, song and prayer, we join with the whole church—gathered together throughout all times and places—to worship Jesus, our risen and exalted King!

What is your favorite season of the church year?
