FULTON—The First United Church of Fulton invites members and friends to join in welcoming the Rev. Louise Barger back to the pulpit on Sunday September 13 during the 11 a.m. traditional worship service. Pastor Louise, as she is known, loved, and remembered, made many friends in the greater Fulton area during the years she served as pastor here. The church is at 33 South Third Street between Cayuga and Utica Streets. All are welcome.

Pastor Louise, is a retired American Baptist minister and served as interim pastor at First United, a blended American Baptist and Presbyterian congregation, from 2017 through the spring of 2021. Before retirement she had been pastor in several American Baptist churches throughout the United States as well as being the Director of Leader Developement of American Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware, and Regional Executive Minister of the Rocky Mountain Region. Pastor Louise’s home is in St. Louis, Mo.

A few months ago, First United found itself without a pastor and without funds to support a full time minister. When it was suggested Pastor Louise might be willing to serve part time remotely, by way of ZOOM, it brought a chuckle; but then was discussed as perhaps possible. When contacted Pastor Louise accepted the challenge; and a “trial run” commenced . First United worked with a tech savvy young man to select the necessary equipment and train key volunteer church members. Pastor Louise’s home church, third Baptist of St Louis was also supportive and helped with use of their church and tech staff and the innovative worship services began. Both denominations are following this experiment and as one congregant said, “Who knows what the future holds…we may be on the cutting edge!”

The plan involves an on site visit every six months to make home and nursing home visits, meet new folks and attend a few meetings. Pastor Louise will be arriving September 9 and preaching Sunday the 13th. The service will include special prayers for the school year and Communion will be served. Worship is at 11 am and will be followed by a covered dish luncheon and a fellowship time for welcoming and visiting for all.
